"Get moving, beast," Zia snarled, shoving the girl roughly through the glowing cage's bars.

Delilah staggered forward, her bloodied fangs bared in a feral snarl. The chains woven into her flesh glowed with a sinister light, restraining her from tearing Zia's head off as she fell to her knees in agony.

Zia smirked, a cruel gleam in her eyes. "Not so tough now, are you, you filthy little monster?" she taunted, carefully opening the cage and making sure not to deactivate the restraints.

"When I break out—" Delilah began, her voice a low growl.

"Which won't be happening any time soon," Zia cut her off with a sneer. "Now move!" She yanked on the chains, which flared a bright, blinding white. Delilah gritted her teeth, trying not to scream as the pain seared through her body. Her flesh sizzled where the metal bit into her skin.

"Whoa."

The two turned to see a dark-skinned boy who looked to be in his mid-teens and a lighter-skinned girl who seemed barely fourteen.

"That looks like it hurts," the boy noted, his eyes wide with shock and a hint of sympathy.

"It does," Zia replied with a twisted smile. The chains glowed a hot red, causing Delilah to collapse to her knees, her body convulsing with silent sobs. Her eyes blazed a fiery red, the pupils slit like a cat's. Her hair, tangled and matted with blood, hung in wild, rough curls around her face.

Delilah looked up at the newcomers, her eyes pleading, filled with a desperate plea for mercy. Sadie felt a pang of guilt twist in her stomach. But Zia, noticing the girl's silent appeal, yanked the chains even harder, making Delilah's eyes dim slightly. "But it's also none of your business," Zia snapped, dragging the chained girl away. Delilah whimpered with every step, her body shuddering in pain. "Remember, girl," Zia continued, her tone mocking, "In this world, there's no room for wicked schemers like you."

"Dear Carter, it really does pay to mind your own business," Sadie murmured, watching the scene with a mix of horror and fascination.

Carter rolled his eyes at his sister. Sadie always tried to act older and wiser whenever she could, or worse, tried to ignore him, which was something he could do without right now.

"As if you're one to talk," Carter shot back. "You couldn't mind your business to save Muffins. You'd probably be given an award: 'Sadie Kane, Known to Never Mind Her Own Business'."

Sadie rolled her eyes, another thing that proved how alike they were. "But really, what did she do to deserve that? Those chains were pierced into her skin!" Carter winced at the memory of it. How she survived it was the question.

He noticed her cage, which still stood tall, and walked up to it. There was a plaque hung on it:
