Days passed since the destruction of the facility, and the quiet felt more like a false peace than a true end. Evelyn and Maya had moved from the immediate area, settling into a temporary safe house provided by Lila's organization, though communication with them had been scarce.Evelyn spent most of her time thinking—about what they had faced, what they had lost, and the questions that still haunted her. The energy breaches were gone, or so it seemed, but the lingering uncertainty gnawed at her. The world felt different now, like the veil between reality and something far more dangerous had been torn open, and there was no going back.
Maya, though still recovering from their final battle at the facility, had been restless too. She had poured over every detail they'd uncovered, analyzing their limited data, searching for clues. Her mind never stopped working, always looking for patterns or signs they had missed.
It was late one night when Evelyn woke to find Maya sitting at the kitchen table, her laptop open, the dim light from the screen casting shadows across her face.
"Can't sleep either?" Evelyn asked quietly, moving toward the table.
Maya looked up, her eyes dark with exhaustion. "No... I can't stop thinking about it. We blew up the facility, we destroyed the breach... but what if that wasn't enough?"
Evelyn sat down across from her. "You think it's still out there, don't you?"
Maya sighed, rubbing her temples. "I've been going through everything again, all the files we pulled before the breach happened. There's something we missed—something bigger than just one facility. There are references in the data to other locations, to other projects. Whatever they were doing here, it's not just isolated to this one site."
Evelyn felt a chill run down her spine. "You think there are more facilities like this one?"
Maya nodded slowly. "I think this was just the tip of the iceberg. The creatures, the energy breaches—those were just the early stages of something much larger. There are mentions of tests being done on a global scale, tapping into different points of the energy grid, trying to harness dimensional energy in ways we can't even fully understand."
Evelyn leaned back in her chair, the weight of the situation pressing down on her. "If that's true... then this isn't over at all."
"No," Maya said, her voice grim. "It's only beginning."
The two of them sat in silence for a moment, the enormity of what they were facing sinking in. The destruction of the facility had been a victory, but it had also been a small part of a much larger puzzle. And now, they were faced with the terrifying reality that the breaches could be spreading, that other locations might already be compromised.
"We need to reach out to Lila," Evelyn said finally, her voice steady. "If there are more of these sites, she'll need to know. We can't handle this alone."
Maya agreed, but there was a shadow of doubt in her eyes. "Do you trust her? Lila helped us, sure, but she's still part of an organization that operates in the shadows. We don't know their true goals."
Evelyn hesitated. Lila had been a critical ally, but Maya was right—there was still so much they didn't know about her or the organization she worked for. But what other choice did they have? They needed resources, information, and backup if they were going to face this growing threat.
"We don't have a choice," Evelyn said. "If what you've found is true, we're going to need all the help we can get. And if Lila's organization is involved in cleaning up breaches, they'll have information we don't."
Maya nodded, though the doubt didn't leave her eyes. "I'll try to contact her tomorrow. We need to move fast."
Evelyn stood, her mind racing with the possibilities. "I'm going to get some fresh air. Clear my head."
