When you write your story, try to make sure to internalize the people's characteristics in you. Meaning, if possible, let them talk to you in your head.
If you want, you can ask these characters what they want to happen to them, at which time (it could be the old and vintage times, the generation X or millennial times, and the new age or Generation Z times), where the settings would take place and who else would like to play with them in these different scenes.
For instance, if your character choses that she wants to be a queen then ask where, which generation or times does she belong in, who are the other protagonists and antagonists, and where are they located (it could be in a place where it may or may not exist in this world), and how would the story flow per scene.
If she tells you all the details, jot them down on your notepad or your phone, which ever you may prefer and then ask her more details.
But if she only chooses to tell you a few details, you may ask who the other characters are in the story and interview them too about the same questions, you've asked her.
When worst comes to worst, you fill in all the gaps and make your imagination run wild and free. This will make you feel a lot better that you have contributed to their story.
Isn't it amazing to be able to know this tip at all and to feel that this is actually possible? For me it truly is. Although every writer is unique but here's the great news, we all have a wide vocabulary and a vivid imagination.
