If the characters decide to leave the story open-ended and hanging, and you are feeling like you cannot continue without their help then, first and foremost, give some time to rest.
Don't pressure yourself to keep writing even if you are left with no more words. These characters and even your readers would not mind at all if you took some breaks in between the writing and the chaos of your personal life.
Don't beat yourself up too hard because if this is what happens, you'd suffer from a writer's block and can possible stop yourself from ever writing again.
So, again if they stop building the story, rest and write again when it feels right, but... (On to Tip number five)
