Running again. The tired thought rushes through my head. Whilst we dart through the forest we hear the horses behind us, crashing through the branches and fallen logs. I run faster than I ever have. My tired arms and legs pumping as fast as they can. When we reach a fork everyone slows down. I don't, I turn down the left side and they follow my silent directions immediately.
The direct trust in my knowledge of the woods astounds me. I run ahead of our group and then find the tree I sleep in most nights. I start to climb the huge tree, Alexis, Hunter, Amos and Lukas following close behind me. When I reach the centre of the tree I drop onto my stomach and motion to them to do the same. I reach over and grab a knife that is strapped on Alexis's leg and cut away slowly at the branch next to me. When it finally falls away and turn onto my side and slip down through the gap.
I throw up bottles of water. I climb back up.
We lay silently across the thick dark branches. Hardly daring to breathe. Though we are extremely exhausted we stay as soundless as we can. I curse under my breath as I realise we are still in our old clothes that reek of sweat and for some of us tears. I touch Alexis's hand and nod towards the gap between the branches. We shuffle over to the gap and slip through. Inside the tree trunk we strip off and put on new clothes.
For Alexis an army jacket, a tight black shirt, black pants and boots. When she's dressed she straps on all of her knives. I get dressed in, a white loose shirt, a black jacket, tight khaki pants, knee high lace up boots and a brown high waisted lace up belt. I pull my black leather quiver over my head so it rest on my back over my shoulder and do the same with my dark wood bow.
I motion to the boys to go down through the gap and change. Whilst they are down there Alexis and I start to burn our old clothes. The twisting smoke gets trapped in the thick leaves hanging from the branches, sending out no signal to where we are. The boys return with their weapons, Amos has his silver mace, hidden inside his shirt, Lukas has his huge hammer hanging from his belt and Hunter with his long sharp blades hidden up his sleeves as always.
They throw all their old clothes into the bright blazing fire, sending up more smoke.
As we sit back down we hear the loud thundering hooves of the creatures.'We need to leave, now." I say in a low steady voice, watching the grey cloudy smoke swish and swirl through the leaves. I pour water over the fire and listen to the short sharp hiss. Lukas and I crawl on our stomachs to the opposite side of the tree and slip through the branches, Alexis, Amos and Hunter following closely behind. Once we reach the ground we run.
The creatures shriek as they chase us through the forest. We run until we reached a cliff. Dead end. There is nowhere to escape as the black clad riders surrounded us. They hiss and click as they move closer. I draw my bow with three arrows and aimed at the swarming dark mass. Alexis and Hunter knives at hand. Amos ready to swing his shiny mace and Lukas holding his silver hammer above his head.
We stood or crouched with our backs to the cascading waterfall, ready to fight. To my surprise they don't attack us. Instead they part down the middle to reveal the tenebrious leader. My eyes widen as the dreadful feeling of desperation hits me, like a cold stone wall. He starts to speak in a strange exotic language that I can't understand. His voice is awful, the words muddled together. Like his tongue is swollen and too big for his mouth.
I frowned trying hard to make sense of what he was saying. Behind me I hear Hunter gasp. I turn around just in time to see Hunter on the ground and Alexis's hand reaching towards me, wrapping tightly around my throat.
My legs kick at her as I struggle to breathe. I look into her eyes as tears fall from mine and see them clouding white, becoming bloodshot with thin red veins. I try to get away. Black spots dance in my vision as my lungs scream for air. Lukas lifts his hammer to strike but Hunter grabs his arm and shouts,"No! It's not Alexis!" Amos looks around, trying desperately to find a way to help. He finally hits the back of her neck. Hard. Knocking her out.
I drop to the floor gasping for air, silent tears streaming down my face. I crawl as far away from her as I can. Lukas holds out his hand to pull me up. When I stand up he wraps his tanned arms around my waist and hugs me tight, murmuring words into my hair that I can't understand. On the ground Alexis stirs. Hunter crouches down next to her and holds her limp hand. She sits slowly up looks behind us. Then she screams, pulled herself backwards on her hands. We all turn to see the dark mass swarming even closer towards us.
"We have to leave, now!"I say in a low voice, trying to keep my words as level as possible.
"Uh Kyla, if you haven't noticed... There's nowhere to go!" Hunter shouts at me, his eyes darting around franticly, looking for a way out. I pull my bow over my back and put my arrows back in their quiver.
I glance at Alexis as I back up and start to run. I leap off the cliff face into the glacial water beneath me. Bubbles surround me as I plunge into the freezing cold. The cold water starts to slowly seep into my muscles. I kick my frozen legs and pull myself to the surface. Once I reach the air above me I notice everyone staring gobsmacked, shocked at my some how amazing stunt. I shout to them to jump, but Alexis seems to be rooted to the spot.
Lukas and Hunter both run and leap off the cliff into the water. Amos tries to pull Alexis towards the cliff but she refuses to jump. His shoulders drop and she turns away from him. He takes that opportunity to knock her out again and throw her over his shoulder. Then he simply steps off the cliff into the darkness of the waterfalls lake.
