Chapter Six:

The swinging cage is small. I slam agonisingly into the bars as the cage jolts from side to side. A small yelp of pain escapes me as my injured arm slams into the cage."Kyla!" Lukas shouts,"Are you okay?" I look through the iron bars at him and shake my head. Each cage is metres apart stopping us from touching one another. Alexis is crying and Hunter pushes at his cage door. Amos hits the lock but it never breaks. Lukas pulls out his hammer and tries to break free but he has no room to swing.

I curl up in a ball and rest my head in my arms."Please stop." I say quietly. Their heads turn slowly towards me. "What are you talking about Kyla? We have to get out!" Amos says his voice growing louder with each angry word."I know you idiot!" I yell,"How the hell am I gonna to figure out a plan with you making all that noise?!" Amos shuts his mouth and looks away with anger. Sighing I rack my brain for an escape plan.

But my mortified mind is a blank white canvas.

No paint.

So no plan.

A desperate sob escapes my lips. Suddenly a loud clang of metal against metal sounds. Shaking the iron walls. Loud footsteps travel towards us. Pausing at the large rusting door to the large chamber we are trapped in.

The metal door bangs open, revealing the leader and a tall figure hidden in a black cloak. The huge monster walks slowly towards Alexis's cage. Examining her dark limbs. She smacks the cage with her strong fist, denting the bars and startling the monster. He mumbles something to low for me to hear, but Alexis flinches at the words. He turns away slowly and begins to examine Hunter, moving away to Amos quickly. He walks straight past Lukas. Heading directly to the iron cage that held me.

His black hollow eyes bore into my skin. Examining every part of my body.

An unnatural snarl escapes my lips. He looks aways quickly.

The awful voice of the monster fills the large room, exaggerating the words,"I am Keres and this," he says gesturing carelessly to the cloaked figure,'Is Adrian but I like to call him Death." he smirks evilly at a hidden jokes. I watch Adrian tense as Keres's hand points at him. Keres laughs abruptly breaking the silence and says loudly,"You can't have her Death, I need her." 'Death' remains motionless and quickly says,"I know." his voice deep and emotionless. Keres walks towards the door not looking back as he says,"You guard them." he walks out the now opening door and turns to grin at me,"If anyone of them moves. You know who to...Dispose of." the rusty door closed slowly on his rotten smile.

Adrian slumped to the cold iron floor. He sighs, hauling off his black cloak. To my surprise 'Death' is a human teenage boy. Though I can see why Keres calls him Death.

He looks as though he brings it, muscled and dangerous.

A long white scar curves in a thin spiral around his strong bicep. His clothes are worn, and his dark blue eyes are tired.

I'm holding my breath, waiting for him to speak.

His head rests against his knees as he murmurs,"I'm not going to kill any of you, don't worry." In my peripheral vision I see Lukas glance at me. I keep my eyes on Adrian, not certain if he's telling the truth."Why not?" I hear Amos say his voice still thick with anger. Adrian looks straight at Amos, his eyes flaring dangerously,

"Because I'm not." he say is voice still level at the usual whisper,"I would ask you to trust me, but I know that won't happen." I try and look at Alexis but shes too far away, with three filled cages blocking my sight.

"Adrian," I whisper trying to catch his eyes,"What's going on?" Adrian stands up and walks to my cage, he clutches the bars to still the swinging and he says,"I can't tell you."

I groan in frustration and Alexis screams incoherently, begging for a rescuer. Adrian walks to a microphone by the door and mumbles audibly,"Bring in some chains."

Adrian glance at Alexis and I,"And some back up." he demands. I look at Lukas in alarm. I can see in his eyes that he is thinking the same thing,"Hey, what are you doing?!" I shout at him, Lukas gives me a warning glance, telling me not to speak. The large rusted door clangs open, revealing five cloaked guards holding long coils of shining black chains. Alexis gradually pulls out a silver dagger from her jacket and hurls it through the bars of her cage. The knife hits the closest guard, skewering him straight through his neck.

I shoot arrows at the guards, taking them down to help Alexis. But more and more keep rushing in. Adrian grabs my bow and rips it out of my hands, I scream and push my arm between the bars trying in vain to get it back. Alexis is dragged kicking and screaming out of her cage.

The guards pin her against the wall and Adrian approaches her cautiously, brandishing a large glass syringe filled with an inky black substance.

He pulls her head to the side, exposing her neck, sticking the needle into her roughly. As he depresses the syringe Alexis's body droops down, her head lolling to the side. Chains are quickly arranged, trapping her against the wall. Adrian and the guards exit the room quickly and leave us in stunned silence.

In my bewildered daze I repeat the confusing scene again and again. I can't understand what just happened. My mind is full of questions with no answers. I look at Hunter, trying to make sense of the muddled reasons for what just happened.

I snap of my daze when I see Hunter smiling. No, not even smiling, more like...grinning."Hunter? Why are you smiling?" I ask angrily. 'Why is he smiling when his sister is chained to a wall!' I think. Lukas and Amos look over at Hunter as well.

Hunter smiles even more and chuckles as he says devilishly,"We're saved." I look at Alexis, hanging limply from the chains. I frown at him, questioning him silently, he laughs again,"She's gonna save us Kyla." Amos looks at Hunter and shouts at him that he's gone completely insane, Lukas nodding in agreement. But I know he's not,"No guys Hunter's right." I tell them. "Alexis is going to wake up, and she's going to get us out." Amos turns to me and pushes him face against the bars to look directly at me."Uh what?" he says loudly,"Guys she's chained to a wall!" I shake my head and turn to stare Alexis.

Lukas watches me worriedly through his cage. I see the black drug seep through the veins in her neck and shoulders. I watch her in anticipation, carefully counting the seconds until something happens. Then I see it. Her fingers slightly twitch towards her chains. Then her head snaps up. She pulls her arms against the chains, violently tearing them from the wall.

Alexis grins wolfishly, then runs towards my cage. She rips away the door. I fall from the cage and land roughly on the ice cold ground. I watch her brutishly tear apart the cages. Releasing us from our iron prisons. One by one the boys crash to the floor, each of them groaning aloud."Kyla! Are you alright?" Lukas shouts, leaping from the floor and rushing to my side. But before he can reach me Alexis steps in front of me, blocking Lukas' path."Alexis, it's okay." Lukas says slowly,"I won't hurt her."

Alexis growls though her teeth at Lukas and she crouches beside me. Placing my arm around her shoulders, she lifts me gently off the cold floor."Thanks Lexi." I say, gently taking her hand. She nods and beckons to the others."We're leaving." Alexis demands, pulling me towards the door. She sticks her hand in-between a small gap of the door and wall. She pushes the door open without letting go of me. The walls seems endless. We rush though the corridors, turning sharp corners, exhausted and panting."Where are we going?" I say, puffing as Alexis drags me through the maze."Where going out." Alexis replies without looking at me. Suddenly we stop at a door. A big rusting wooden door blocking the exit.
