Exhausted I collapse in the pebbly sand breathing heavily. Lukas and Hunter follow my actions and lie next to me, their chest's rising and falling quickly. I hear a shriek and see Alexis race out of the water like a speeding bullet. I roll onto my stomach and watch her frantically shake the cold water from her body. My frame jolts with violent shivers as I crawl away from the edge of the lake.
Hunter helps me to my feet and beckons to the others to follow him into the trees. I shiver as cold water pools beneath me. The boys have gone for fire wood. I'm sitting across from Alexis. I'm shocked that we could be friends for this long, we are the perfect opposites of each other.
Alexis has shoulder length straight dark brown hair, my hair is a wild waterfall of hip length shiny golden curls. Alexis has the hard, dark and tough skin from her father, mine is breakable and pale like my mothers. My eyes the bright blue of the ocean and hers the deep brown of the darkest wood. Alexis is kind and helps others when needed, I am seen in the village as a cursed ghost, dangerous and alone. Haunting the feared forest.
We are always told we were beautiful.
While Lukas started the fire we all took of our jackets, boots and weapons. Trying to keep warm was the main priority. Amos already had food covered. It appeared we had set up camp near an apple tree and the waterfalls lake was the home of many healthy fish. The bright orange flames of the fire danced as the cold breeze whispered through the blades of grass. I sat as close to the fire as I could without burning my fragile skin.
The suffocating heat of the fire was drying my clothes quickly. My frozen feet were slowly melting back to their original moveable state. Alexis sat away from the flames, sharpening her knives slowly. One by one. She looked menacing in the orange and red lights, her eyes lit dangerously.
Amos strutted around the fire to her,"A thank-you would be nice, I did save your life you know!" he added quickly, his green eyes on the dangerous and sharp blades. She lifted her head and glared at him,"Thank-you Amos for saving my miserable life, because I'm such a helpless and weak woman, I can't possibly protect myself." she said her low voice dripping with sarcasm. His smile disappears then he decides to make a big mistake.
He starts to taunt her.
Amos skips girlishly around the rock she sits on, acting out a completely different scene to the one that happened at the cliff. His impression of her voice fake and wrong, nothing at all like her own. When she doesn't reply to the teasing, he makes another big mistake. Before anyone can stop him he speaks the words that could cost him his life."You cant even throw those stupid knives." Her hands freeze and her head turns towards him. He turns to pick up an apple as Alexis growls,"What did you say?" Amos repeats himself and takes a huge bite from the crisp red fruit.
As fast a lightening Alexis whips out a knife and hurls it at his apple. His head snaps back from the force of her throw. She puts her hands on her hips,"What were you saying Amos?" she says sweetly,"How I can't throw knives?" he shakes his head violently trying to speak with the apple in his mouth, she holds up her hand and he stops abruptly,"The next time you say that prepare to die." she says, sitting back down on the rock.
I sigh and rip the apple out of Amos's mouth, then smack him hard on the back of the head."Why in Gods name did you say that to her? You could have been killed!" He's to busy groaning in pain to reply. I mumble how much of an idiot he is under my breath. Lukas wrenches the knife from the apple and hands it to me.
Hunter takes the apple and tosses it at Amos's head. I stick the knife in a tree and walk away from the fire towards the waterfalls lake. The dark depths of the water are spooky. The full moon like a spotlight on the surface. The water tumbling down the cliff face is quieter than when I jumped. I hear leaves crunching behind me. I curse myself for leaving my bow by the fire.
I turn to see Lukas stumbling through the branches."How did you get through here without making any sound!?" he exclaimed. I laugh," Well for one thing I actually watched where I was going!" I say trying to hide my smile. He laughs along with me and joins me by the water.
Lukas asks me I'm okay. I frown at the lake,"What do you mean?" he turns to me and starts a huge speech. About how my whole family must of gotten captured, how I got strangled by my best friend and I jump off a cliff into below zero degrees water, "Lukas," I say, "Something happened to Alexis, it wasn't her. And I jumped off that cliff because I had to save everyone somehow! And I-" I stop and catch myself from speaking anymore and sit down on the sand,
"What about your family?" Lukas whispers into the night air. I stare into his eyes as I speak four words that I know would cause me a lot of pain,"I don't have one." His expression changes from confusion to a mixture of questioning and pity. I stand up and walk back to the blazing fire. Alexis is laying down next to where Hunter was sitting watch. I lay down next to her trying desperately to fall asleep before Lukas returns to camp. Alexis takes my hand in hers and whispers goodnight. I watch the stars through the shadowy leaves of the trees until I fall asleep.
