The Maze – Day 014
I wake up slowly with the very first rays of sunshine. I stretch out and get out of bed in a good mood. The day had come, I was a Runner. Excited, I hurry to get dressed. I'm wearing my appropriate underwear, socks, black short shirt with high collar, khaki multi-pocket shorts, matching jacket, black belt, black fingerless gloves, black running shoes, black harness for the back, My black waist belt with a thigh pocket, my black multi-pocket waist belt. I quickly look into the mirror wondering if I should take off my mother's necklace, but decided to keep it around my neck anyway, but hide it under my sweater. I tie my hair into a perfect high ponytail and give a bone to Max who was still sleeping before coming out of my high while running to the kitchens, a wide smile on his lips.
- WOW! Marie! Exclaims Frypan as he puts down his knife.
- What do you think? I ask when I arrive in front of him.
- Turn around to see. He says, pointing.
I make a slow pirouette to show him my Runner equipment.
- You're beautiful. He lifts me up and spins me in the air as I desperately cling to his neck laughing with a good heart.
- I shouldn't be gone all day, but do you have any snacks for me?
- I have snacks and a sandwich. He says give me the meal and the side-dishes. Minho oversees your water ration.
- Thank you, Fry. I kiss his cheek. We'll see each other again tonight. Then I went to the Map Room jogging.
When I arrive in front of the Runners' lair, I start walking. I open the door and hardly entered, straw falls from the sky as the Runners shouted congratulations with euphoria.
- What is that? I laugh.
- This is your welcome ceremony among the Runners. Nick exclaims.
- Which also implies this. Minho says to me.
He puts a knee on the ground and reaches me with his two hands, a knife with teeth with a handle made of lianas and some flowers. I take it in my hands to observe.
- Hoping you never need it. Minho says.
- Are you ready? Asks me Brandon.
- Yes. So, what do we start with? I ask.
- By some basic information. Dan tells me.
Hank comes in and gives me a backpack with some basics in it.
- This is your bag. You only have one so take care of it. Tells me the latter. It contains a small first aid kit, some matches, a pencil, a notepad and... He takes the bag and pulls out a boxer that he will put away, his cheeks red. It won't be useful to you I think.
- I hope you never have to use it but you also have a distress rocket. Ben says to me, showing me the object. You only use it if you see a Grivers in the Maze. This will tell the other Runners to leave the Maze urgently and allow the other Gladers to barricade the Council Room in case they enter the Glade. He pauses for a moment. If it ever happens, and it never has, you take the rocket, point it towards the sky and unpin it before throwing it into the air. Normally, red light should come out like a firework.
- You also have to take notes every day of your trip, whether you notice changes or not. Alfred tells me.
- Today and for the duration of your training, you will run with me. Says Minho. I will teach you what you need to know, then you will start running alone or in a team depending on the days.
