Prologue

Azari lay on the ground of the ship, exhausted. She had been running all day and had finally made it onto the boat. She knew that her father would be furious if he found her here, well he would if he even remembered who she was. Commander Zhao of the fire nation, one of the fire lord's most trusted soldiers. He was one of the richest men in the fire nation yet he threw his daughter out when he found out she was a waterbender. He was furious with her mother when he discovered it, in fact he had her mother executed because of it. Azari was seven when it happened, and the second her mother died was the second she had been dumped onto the streets of the fire nation. She had to waterbend to survive, but stealthily, because if anyone knew she was a waterbender she would probably have been sent to prison or worse, labeled as a spy and traitor to the fire nation.

The young fire nation girl was only thirteen but she looked much older, her long black curls draped down to her hips even in the high ponytail she always wore. Her face was thin and her gold eyes were sharp and observant, she was also tall and thin which added to her looking much older.

After several minutes Azari got up and began to walk around the ship, she was wearing simple red clothing so that she would appear as a mere servant on the ship, then she could carry out her mission, get back to land and earn her reward.

A couple days ago Azari had been given the task of killing commander Zhao by a man on the black market, she was told her reward would be a thousand gold coins and she hadn't given it a second thought. She had been on missions like this before, it was her only source of income, and even though she hated it it gave her the money she needed. Zhao was her father but that didn't mean anything in Azari's eyes.

Azari walked quietly through the halls of the ship listening closely at every door for a sign of activity. Unfortunately for her everyone was out on deck, so out on deck she would have to go. Azari shifted her satchel from one shoulder to the other, she was nervous but she couldn't place why.

Azari slowly walked onto the deck of the ship, there were very few soldiers on deck and her target was nowhere in sight. Why did her father have so few people on board with him? A creeping cessation washed through Azari. Was this the right boat? Azari went back inside the ship and found her way to the helm of the ship and slowly opened the door.

There were voices speaking softly inside and Azari froze so that she could hear the conversation.

"Uncle, I don't know how I'm going to live like this, in exile, this isn't right, I am the prince of the fire nation. How can my father treat me like this?!" The first voice was younger, but old at the same time.

"Zuko, your father is not one to make the best decisions but if you think about it things could be a lot worse, you need to take some time to rest and regain strength before you start your search for the avatar," the second voice was old and wise, he knew what he was talking about.

"I don't have time to rest! I have to find the avatar and regain my honor!" The first voice, Zuko, yelled at the old man ferociously. Azari flinched and stepped back, not registering what she had just heard. She could not have gotten on the wrong boat, it wasn't possible, and it was even more impossible for her to have gotten on the exact boat that the banished prince was on. She was horrified, what had she gotten herself into?
