The rain was my first love. As a little girl I would sit at the top of the stairs next to the front door curled in a blanket as the quiet earth was quilted with rain. Now, I sit in the front seat of Charlie's cruiser watching the rain drops race across the window. The car was filled with comfortable silence. I wasn't mad that he hadn't asked me about Arizona or Florida. I knew he had a lot going on. His brow was creased in the middle and he had a a deep frown on his face. I let out a small sigh. I wish I could help.A grin spread across my lips as we pulled into the familiar driveway. The white house I loved so much hadn't aged with time.
"We're home bug." Charlie said with a sigh. I gave him my best smile "Everything will be okay daddy, I promise." I held out my pinkie finger. He locked our pinkies making me giggle. A pinkie promise is always the best way to seal a deal.
I attempted to carry both of my suitcases upstairs which ultimately ended in failure. I need to start lifting weights, I'll add that to my to do list. Luckily Charlie carried both of them up the stairs with ease. "I kept everything the same since you left." He said as he opened the brown wooden door. I grinned at my cream colored walls and pastel yellow comforter. It was exactly how I left it. Even the white vanity had the same paint chips. It was an antique Charlie had found at the reservation. As soon as he saw it he gave the old gentleman $50 for it.
"I'm going to let you unpack. Bella's room is right across the hall. I'm gonna go check on her." His eyes were cast downward. Even though he couldn't see it, I gave him a smile of encouragement.
Placing Mr. Melvin on my bed gently between the four pillows sitting against the old white wrought iron bed frame. I threw my blanket down after him. It was time to get busy, I knew this would take me a while.
I grinned in victory at my now full closet and empty suitcases. A part of me was scared to see Bella, seeing others in pain has never been my strong suit. There's something about seeing someone you love being not even a fraction of themselves anymore that is heart breaking. I needed to be brave though.
My slipper clad feet padded across the hallway to Bella's room. Lifting my arm, I gave the door a frail knock.
"Bells it's me, Lilah. I'm coming in okay." I gently pushed the door open. Bella sat in a wooden chair next to her bay window. One of her legs was propped up as she rested her chin on it. I quietly padded over to her.
"Bells," I said quietly. Her head turned towards me. Her skin was slightly more pale than I remembered and she had deep black bags under her eyes.
"Lilah," she said breathlessly. Dropping her leg, she rose from her chair wrapping her arms around me. I immediately returned the gesture.
"I thought dad just told me you were coming to get a reaction out of me. You're really here," her tone held disbelief and uncertainty.
"I'm here Bells, and I'm not going anywhere." My eyes pricked with tears and my throat began to fell full. Don't cry Lilah, don't cry Lilah, be brave.
Pulling away she held me at arms length and smiled. I giggled as I reached towards her, pulling her into a hug again.
Charlie cleared his throat from the door. "I told you Bells," a smile spread across his lips.
"Thank you," Bella said.
I knew I wouldn't mend Bella's broken heart entirely but I was going to try to. The sound of soft rain padded against the roof as I lay in Bellas bed. The smile had left from her lips almost as quickly as it came but it was an improvement. We'd been talking for almost three hours now. Bella was talking about her friends from school and since I couldn't relate I talked about the different hotels I stayed in. She seemed to avoid every aspect of her life that involved her old boyfriend. Like he never even existed.
A shrill scream startled me awake. I didn't even realize I was falling out of the bed until the hard wood floor welcomed me. I must've fallen asleep in Bella's room, I untangled my legs from the purple comforter just as Charlie came rushing in.
"What's going on, is she okay?" I asked as I wrapped my arms around myself. Bella writhed around in the bed as if she was in pain. Her screams still echoed off the walls. Charlie quickly took her in his arms as the screams began to stop.
"She's okay, she's okay," he said softly. I bite my lip harshly to keep the tears from escaping my eyes.
"I'm sorry you had to hear that bug," Charlie said as he opened his other arm. I padded over and dove into his chest. He gently tucked my blonde hair behind my ear and kissed my head.
"Let's get you to bed," he said as he gently left Bella's side. I nodded and whipped a stray tear that fell down my cheek.
My eyes fell closed as I dreamed of a gray wolf in the woods. It ran through the trees restlessly, almost like it was looking for something but could never find it.
