Tsubaki POV

If I can't be lazy in the whiteroom I'll be lazy in my narrations.

Near the end of our 5th year music like the piano, violin, etc. calligraphy, tea ceremony, and other traditional cultural pursuits were added and it wasn't long until all of us turned 6 and a new thingy was added.

They introduced a half-day class once or twice a month called "travel," using a virtual console. All the children put on large goggles, and the screen lit up, starting the program.

"Today, we'll focus on Japan. In the past, we studied American cities like New York and Hawaii. First, we'll start with public transportation."

This class showed a world beyond the White Room. We were told early on that we wouldn't leave this place until adulthood.

Except for those who simply drop out while trying their best will suffer the most. After all Shiro said he wanted to drop out which I didn't mind as I have Mr X as I call him because he refuses to give his name.

Makes sense if I'm caught he'll think I won't be able to identify him when I already know him based on the way he walks, breathes and how different his footsteps are compared to others, his smell, his build etc.

The virtual console created a realistic 360-degree view with sound, replicating the outside world with remarkable accuracy. It depicted scenes like a businessman, an elderly man with a cane, and a woman getting into a cab.

Children were also shown, but unlike real life, they moved mechanically. We learned about the world's history and structure to adapt.

The virtual console wasn't just for viewing the outside world; it trained our observation skills that I seemed to already mainly have so this part was easier for me than others I would say.

We had to spot unnatural points in various scenes. If we failed or pointed out the wrong thing, the instructors' guidance was harsh, often involving pain. This fear sharpened our senses.

"Next, let's take a virtual walk in Tokyo."

As we walked, the screen went dark, and the instructors' voices stopped.

"Everyone take off your goggles."

The voice came from the room, not the microphone. We followed the instructions.

"There's an equipment issue. That's it for today's lesson. Please stay here."

The goggles were collected, and we waited.

The problem couldn't be quickly resolved, so the instructors moved on to another curriculum. We lined up and focused on the next activity.

"We're going to read out names. The first person called will move with the instructor."

Three names were called, and I was second and Kiyotaka was last.

I followed the instructor to a private room with a small table and two chairs.

"Sit down"

The instructor said, tapping the table.

I sat in front of the instructor as he laid out five cards with different symbols: a circle, square, cross, star, and wave. "Watch carefully," he said, turning all the cards over so their backs showed the same pattern.

He then shuffled and called out symbols as he flipped them over, guessing incorrectly most of the time.

He repeated this process ten times, getting about 30% correct. "Now it's your turn, Sakurako." I took his seat. What was the purpose? Not psychic abilities, surely. Maybe to train intuition? Nah the whiteroom isn't illogical apart from it goal.
