Debating was the thing of the day in VanDeWalle's class- well more like thing of the month considering that's all they've done all month. The debate of the day? Aspyn and Brooklyn.
Now here's the thing, Aspyn was what you would consider a speech kid, so Brooklyn was getting crushed in the debate. Though, i don't think it took a kid with much brain power to beat Brooklyn. Normally Tessa wouldn't feel bad for Brooklyn, but this was just sad.
Now for this to make sense you have to know the rules, both people had their topic agreed upon on an earlier date. Each person got 5 minutes to make their statements and then 3 for rebuttals. After that they got 2 for final statements. The crowd didn't get to make a vote, except for the secret judge that was randomly assigned, which on VanDeWalle's part probably wasn't the smartest showing as how there was clearly bias in how the boys voted. At the end of the period the secret judge would slip a piece of paper onto her desk with the name of the person who won. The next day the name of who won would be announced.
Technically speaking there would be bias in how Tessa voted either way. On the one hand was Brooklyn, her cousin, and the other was Aspyn... her long-term crush of a few years now. But did it really count if Brooklyn was gonna lose anyway? Well if people knew about her crush then technically yes, it could be considered bias. But nobody knew right?
Weeeeeeeellllllllll....
Maybe a few people knew, or a lot. She had accidentally let it slip one day at volleyball practice. She begged for nobody to say anything, and they didn't, well mostly everybody did- Brooklyn said some stuff to some boys, so Tessa had to practically beg them to not say anything. It really wasn't necessary though, they wouldn't have said anything anyway.
And now thinking about it, Brooklyn deserves this, she had let Tessa's biggest secret "slip" for some attention from the boys. But then again voting on that term would be clear bias, and now the judges were getting graded too- because of how the boys voted.
But Brooklyn was getting crushed so it didn't matter- but what if Brooklyn told VanDeWalle about Tessa's "bias". Would Tessa get in trouble or would VanDeWalle tell Brooklyn she was gonna lose regardless. Technically speaking though, Tessa couldn't vote Brooklyn because of how bad she was losing, and if she did then she was biased for voting family.
So don't vote Brooklyn then, VanDeWalle would understand. She was stuck in a situation of bias so she picked the one that was clearly better. But what if Brooklyn told her- worse- what if Brooklyn got told that she was gonna lose and does something drastic. What if Brooklyn tells more people about her crush on Aspyn.
There weren't very many people to tell, but what if she did and then word gets around to Aspyn. Brooklyn wouldn't do that though... right? To be honest Brooklyn had that temperament to her, didn't matter who it was to.
Just as the round ended the bell rang, her vote needed to be in. Tessa scribbled a name onto the paper, the name of the clear winner. As she walked out of the room and down the hall to 7th period a thousand thought crossed her mind. Would one bad grade really make up for her secret getting out, but what if Brooklyn didn't say anything. The voting was by a secret judge, well "secret" judge. When VanDeWalle announced the result she would announce the judge as well. It also didn't take a rocket scientist to see who was writing on a slip of paper at the end of the period.
The real point was so that the opponents couldn't cater to ONE specific person because they don't know who the judge is during the debate.
As she sat down at her desk she hid her face in her shirt, this was it, it was over. In less than 24 hours the winner would be announced... and so would the judge. Her secret would be out all because her cousin can't handle the fact that she just might not be the best at everything she does, the fact that she's not even good at everything she does, or anything she does.
~~
After school Tessa entered the locker room to get ready for practice. Waiting a moment, she watched Brooklyn walk out. Then, turning to some of the other players, she looked as if she was going to cry.
"Tessa...?" One of the girls began, clearly concerned. There was nobody in there that she didn't trust, so she knew it was safe to tell everybody her situation.
Almost immediately she broke down and spilled everything that took place in class. She shared all of her inner thoughts about what she feared would happen.
Everybody in there had already known that she liked Aspyn, they just didn't know Brooklyn knew. And yet, everybody agreed she would do something like that. It really wasn't that far out of line for her. The real question was, would she do that to her own family? Probably.
Lucky for Tessa, she was actually well-liked around the school, so people were more willing to stand up for her, and that's exactly what they did. She was friends with more popular people, she was popular herself. Brooklyn thought she was, but in reality everybody hated her guts.
~~
The next day after the lunch bell rang, Tessa, as well as the rest of her class, filed into VanDeWalle's room. There was a feeling of ease and at the same time a pit in her stomach. Just because she had a lot of people in her corner, she couldn't necessarily predict when Brooklyn would share her secret, if she would at all.
Just before walking fully into the classroom, Tessa stoped VanDeWalle outside it. The look of urgency on her face said exactly what VanDeWalle needed to know, she needed to tell her something NOW. Tessa skipped the full details, but kept the important ones.
-she liked aspyn
-her vote wasn't bias, Brooklyn just sucked
-Brooklyn knew she liked aspyn
-she might use it against her, and claim her vote was biased"Don't worry, I have a plan"
A confused look made it's was onto Tessa's face. "How... how do you have a plan already..?"
"Tessa, I'm not stupid. I know you like her and I had a feeling something like this would happen sooner or later. Did you tell anyone you were judging?"
"No"
"Does anybody else know you like Aspyn?"
"Yes..."
"Who, just name one."
"Uh- I dont know- Santiago-"
VanDeWalle peaked her head into the classroom and called Santiago out to the hall. She gave him the rundown on what would happen. She would tell the class that Santiago was the secret judge and that would save Tessa the pressure of almost loosing her secret. He agreed and walked back into the room.
As Tessa turned to do the same VanDeWalle stopped her.
"Tessa,"
"Yeah?"
"Maybe you should tell Aspyn how you feel."
"Why would I do that?!"
"I'm just saying. I knew you liked her before you told me right?"
"What does that mean-"
"It means that it just might be worth it."
