Me and Tanjiro are running side by side, following Urokodaki through a large field.
Me and Tanjiro are far behind, struggling for air.Meanwhile, Urokodaki is miles ahead, dirt separating from the ground."H-he's so...so fast!"I grunt, hair falling into my face."No kidding, my feet are on fire!"He replied."I can't even hear his footsteps at all!"
"Me neither, my hearing is usually a lot better than this"I sigh, wiping sweat from my brow.Tanjiro is carrying that basket with a sheet as well so he's carrying more than any of us.———————————
By the time we get to the end, we're both hunched over and dry heaving, me more than him since I hadn't eaten in days.
"Does this mean...please tell me this means I passed the test"Tanjiro heaves and i lay on my back, trying not to throw up.Urokodaki pulls off the white hood and looks over his shoulder "We're just beginning the test, we'll be climbing a mountain"
I practically vomit in my mouth at these words, closing my eyes for a second before looking up at Tanjiro, who is also exhausted.
We both grunt, looking at Urokodaki."Are you serious? My lungs are in my mouth!"I protest."Deadly"I hate one word sentences, so much meaning in so little words.
——————————
Tanjiro tucked Nezuko into a futon on the floor inside of Urokodaki's house.
"I promise I'll take care of your sister for you while you're gone"
Tanjiro turns around to look at Urokodaki, I lay slumped against a chair, pounding back water so I don't pass out before I even get a chance at being a slayer.Atlas is perched on my shoulder, only dropping her head down to drink whatever water drops down my chin before it hits my yellow kimono.Which reminds me, I should probably wear clothes that'll allow me more movement..."I do appreciate that, Sir"Tanjiro thanks him, his face as serious as it is genuine.Something tells me that me and him are going to become good friends...
——————————
We walk through dark trees, clouds of fog swirling around us.Not one of us says a word, only walking further up the mountain with the familiar crunch of leaves beneath our feet.Me and Tanjiro are gasping for air as we get further up, trying to gather enough air to steady our breathing.
I'm feeling a little dizzy...and my knees are beginning to give way...
Suddenly, we stop in our tracks, looking forward to Urokodaki and awaiting instructions.
"Now, find your way back to my house at the foot of the mountain. This time, I won't wait until day break"He instructed us, his voice hoarse before he practically evaporated into mist.
"That's the test?I get it...because of the fog, he thinks we might get lost..."Tanjiro said more to himself than to anyone in particular. Not that there was many people for him to talk to other than me, and I wasn't paying much attention anyway."I've memorised Mr Urokodaki's scent"He smiled."And I memorised the patterns of his heartbeat, they'll just get louder the closer we get"I smile back. You know, we seem like a pretty good team.He can sniff out whatever we need and I can hear if anything gets closer to us.
