After a long and tiresome Hashira meeting, Giyuu Tomioka stood alone near the back of the group, waiting for the others to disperse. His usual silence remained unbroken, his eyes distant as the other Hashira chatted amongst themselves. He wasn’t one for long conversations, nor was he interested in continuing the loud banter that accompanied these gatherings.

But, of course, Kyojuro Rengoku was the exception to this unspoken rule.

With his ever-present bright smile, Kyojuro walked up to Giyuu, his energy almost palpable as he spoke, “Tomioka! My friend, I have a wonderful idea—how about you visit my place today? We can catch up, share stories, and I can make you something to eat!”

Giyuu’s first instinct was to refuse, as always. “No,” he muttered, his voice low and definitive.

But Kyojuro wasn’t one to be discouraged. He laughed boisterously and leaned in closer, “Come now, there’s no need to be shy! It’ll be fun, I promise! Just a short visit, what do you say?”

“I’m busy,” Giyuu tried again, his eyes shifting away, hoping that would be enough.

Kyojuro, however, was persistent. “Busy? But it’s evening, and you’ve been at the meeting all day! Surely you can spare a few hours for a friend, right?”

Giyuu paused, his resolve weakening. Kyojuro was relentless in his cheerfulness, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to resist. With a sigh of resignation, Giyuu finally muttered, “Fine. Just for a short time.”

“Excellent!” Kyojuro beamed, clapping Giyuu on the back with enough force to make him stumble slightly. “Let’s go, then!”

As they walked to the Rengoku household, Kyojuro did most of the talking, his voice filling the quiet evening air with tales of recent missions, training exercises, and his usual enthusiasm for life. Giyuu, as expected, remained silent, offering only the occasional nod or one-word reply. However, there was one topic that piqued Giyuu’s interest.

“My little brother, Senjurou,” Kyojuro began, “he’s growing up fast, but he’s not like me or Father. He’s a bit... softer, you could say. More gentle. He’s only 14, but I’m sure you’ll like him! He’s kind-hearted and always tries his best.”

Giyuu’s focus sharpened at the mention of Senjurou. He had heard about Kyojuro’s younger brother before but had never met him. The way Kyojuro spoke of him—soft, gentle—it was a stark contrast to the fiery demeanor Kyojuro and their father, Shinjuro, were known for.

As they arrived at the Rengoku household, Kyojuro pushed the door open with ease. “Ignore my Father,” Kyojuro said casually, “he’s probably asleep. Let’s head inside.”

They walked through the house, and soon, Giyuu’s eyes fell upon Senjurou, who was quietly sweeping the floor. The sight of the young boy made Giyuu’s heart skip a beat. There was something about the way Senjurou moved, his soft and delicate presence, that made Giyuu feel something unfamiliar—something that tugged at his chest.

Kyojuro, ever the enthusiastic older brother, quickly introduced them. “Senjurou! This is my good friend, Tomioka Giyuu! Giyuu, this is my younger brother, Senjurou.”

Senjurou looked up, a soft blush dusting his cheeks as he greeted Giyuu with a small bow. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Tomioka-san.”

Giyuu found himself momentarily at a loss for words. Senjurou wasn’t like his brother or his father—he was shy, gentle, and there was a softness to his features that made him appear almost fragile. His body was lean, but not in the typical way of a boy his age. His limbs seemed delicate, his skin fair, and there was a certain femininity to the way he carried himself.
