"A load of nonsense," I thought as we strolled in and were greeted by a manner of stereotypically "dark" creatures such as strixes, wolves and dragons. Years ago, when they were being hunted down, we saved them because we had felt that they were not inherently bad. Also, we both felt a strange compulsion to save them, as though the creatures that live in the shadows were our kin. Oddly enough, when we requested them to not kill humans and arcana, they agreed. Funnily enough, despite being carnivores, they have stopped eating meat simply because I bring them food from my house, and my mother is a fantastic cook, so...

Ashwini typically spends some time hanging out with the wolf pack while I fly with the dragons. The alpha(wow gen alpha has ruined this word)   of the wolf pack, Lycan, and the leader of the dragons, Midnight, also happen to be Ashwini's and my familiars respectively. We typically visit them every once in a while but can't have them with us in our homes for obvious reasons.

As usual, they greeted us with a round of "Hello/Greetings, masters". One thing I really love about these guys is that when I told them I was uncomfortable being called "mistress" because I associated it with the idea of an affair partner, they started calling me Master Shreya, which amused me to no end.

However, we were not there for hellos. Quite the opposite, unfortunately.

"So, guys, there's something we ought to tell you." I began, taking a deep breath. We had put off for as long as possible but we were due to leave the next day. The lump in my throat only grew bigger as Midnight called her kin and Lycan did the same for his wolf pack, the owls and strixes perched in the trees as they awaited us to speak.
