I had long since stopped tapping my foot, and the outskirts of the wood was now shrouded in silence as Lycan and I faced each other. "Like a burial shroud," I thought before I could stop myself as I shuddered.
Hearing my thoughts and sensing my terror, his harsh features softened a little as he elaborated, "You are not in immediate danger. However there are certain threats currently present in your school. I had to kill someone who had tried to hurt Linda, and stole his voice to talk to you in English because I have a prophecy, of sorts that you should know. The exact words he said." The grim look on his face told me I didn't want to know who this mysterious "he"was.
I didn't really bat an eye at the murder confession, though. I would have done the same.
Lycan began uttering the prophecy, and a faint greenish light seemed to emanate from his face as he said, "He who hides in plain sight, and holds a knife in hand, shall do all in his power to bring about the downfall of..." he stopped short. "And then he said your names" he mumbled apologetically, and I realised that he probably forgot the last bit. He confirmed that he didn't remember the exact wording but that was essentially what "he" said. As he finished giving me the prophecy, his regal posture slumped as he shut his eyes and sighed, and I was inclined to do the same. A myriad of questions raced through my mind as I tried to make sense of it all. Who is the "he" mentioned in the prophecy? Why does he want to destroy Ash and I? And WHY are they even targeting us? Could it be... no, of course not. We never told anyone...
I figured I knew one question, at the very least, that Lycan might be able to answer, "Why didn't you tell Ashwini?" I asked, unable why Lycan would keep this from his own human partner. "Ashwini," Lycan sighed, both fondly and exasperatedly, "is far too impatient and hotheaded, and would immediately try to find the person and give it away that we're onto them." He replied, and my heart warmed both as I knew that's exactly what my best friend would do, but also that Lycan used the word 'we', implying that he was going to help us. "Which," I thought, "leads me to my next question." "Is this why you and Midnight were so insistent about coming with us?" I queried further, hoping he would not realise that I was scoping him to see if Midnight also knew and whether she was down to help us.
He grinned slyly, "Child, you're gonna have to do better than that."
The rest of the conversation passed in a blur as we realised we did not have much time before Ash came looking for me. I asked curt questions, and he answered them. Yes, Midnight knew. No, they wanted to come solely for our sake but were willing to fight us. No, they had no idea why they were after us, although he seemed to be ashamed, for I didn't know. No, Lycan did not eat the guy. The last one was purely for my amusement, but even without it, we had more no's than yeses, and the prophecy was the only thing we really knew. Lycan, cold as he was, apologised profusely for the lack of information as I brushed it off and wished him farewell. He barely made it into the woods before Ashwini returned and asked, "Who was that? Did I hear the word prophecy?"
