The energy in the packed arena was palpable as the 2024 VMAs buzzed with anticipation. Y/N sat in her seat, trying to steady her breathing while nervously tapping her foot. Her hands fidgeted with the hem of her dress, heart racing as she awaited the announcement of the Best New Artist award. This was a moment she'd dreamed about, but as the seconds stretched, the excitement and nerves tangled together, creating an anxious buzz under her skin.
Across the room, a few rows away, Y/N caught a glimpse of Tate, who was casually chatting with another artist, looking effortlessly cool as always. Both of them had experienced a whirlwind of success recently, and though they were seated far apart tonight, Y/N felt a surge of pride when she thought of Tate's nomination too. Yet, tonight wasn't about competition between them. It was about celebration, no matter who took home the award.
"And the winner for Best New Artist is... Y/N Y/L/N!"
The sound of her name cut through the noise like a sharp intake of breath. For a brief moment, Y/N felt everything go silent. The arena erupted into applause and cheers, but her first instinct wasn't to go toward the stage. Instead, her eyes darted to the one person who mattered the most in the room: Tate.
Sitting further back, Tate's face lit up with a grin of pure pride, her eyes sparkling under the stage lights. In that instant, all the rehearsed words, the formalities, and the stage felt insignificant. Without thinking, Y/N jumped up from her seat, not in the direction of the stage, but directly toward Tate.
The crowd began to buzz with confusion, laughter soon following as Y/N veered off-course, running past the rows of seats. She dashed, her heels clicking loudly on the ground, her heart leading her straight to the one person who made this moment complete. She finally reached Tate, nearly knocking her over as she threw her arms around her, hugging her with everything she had.
Tate laughed, hugging her back just as tightly. For a long moment, they held each other, the noise of the arena fading away as they created a little bubble just for themselves. Y/N buried her face into Tate's neck, hearing her soft whispers through the rush of adrenaline. "I'm so proud of you," Tate murmured, her voice thick with emotion. "You've earned every bit of this."
Y/N smiled, pulling back just enough to meet Tate's gaze, eyes gleaming. She didn't care that all the cameras had zoomed in on them, capturing the heartfelt moment. She leaned forward and kissed Tate softly, their lips meeting in a tender, celebratory kiss, as the audience roared even louder.
After what felt like an eternity, Y/N finally pulled away, a bashful smile creeping onto her face as she realized how long she had delayed the show. She gave Tate one last squeeze, whispering, "I love you," before turning around to make her way back toward the stage.
The crowd was on their feet, clapping and laughing in good spirits as Y/N made her way up the steps. She felt her heart flutter with happiness when she spotted Taylor Swift standing up and holding out her hand for a high five. With a grin, Y/N gave her a hearty slap on the hand, the excitement of the moment making her giddy.
Finally reaching the microphone, she let out a breathless laugh. "Sorry for the detour! I had to go see someone pretty important first." She shot a playful wink toward Tate, who was still standing in the audience, beaming. The crowd erupted into more applause, clearly enjoying the sincerity and spontaneity of the moment.
"And, uh, I also just high-fived Taylor Swift, so... my life is officially made," Y/N added, her voice rising with excitement. "No big deal, right? Just a casual Tuesday night."
The audience laughed, loving her candid, down-to-earth charm. Y/N took a deep breath, composing herself enough to continue her speech.
"Okay, seriously though—wow. This is insane," Y/N began, her voice steadying as she started to address the room. "I want to thank everyone who has supported me on this journey. To my fans, you're literally everything. You've made my dreams come true, and I can't thank you enough for sticking with me."
Her eyes scanned the crowd briefly before settling once again on Tate, who hadn't stopped smiling since Y/N's name was called. Y/N's heart swelled with emotion, and she couldn't resist acknowledging the person who had been her anchor through it all.
"And, of course, I have to thank someone incredibly special... Tate," Y/N said, her voice softening as she spoke her girlfriend's name. "You've been my rock through all of this, and I honestly don't know what I'd do without you. You inspire me every day, and I'm so lucky to have you by my side."
Tate's eyes glistened, her smile widening as the camera panned over to her. The crowd responded with another wave of applause and cheers, recognizing the heartfelt connection between the two.
Y/N continued, throwing in a few lighthearted jokes to ease the emotional tension. "I almost didn't survive my first tour," she quipped, drawing laughter from the crowd. "I mean, I tripped like ten times during rehearsals. I'm honestly shocked they still let me go on stage."
Her self-deprecating humor won over the room, and she even pointed out a few of the music icons sitting in the front row, saying, "You guys don't understand, I was fangirling so hard just sitting next to these legends tonight. Like, I still can't believe I'm here."
The audience was loving her energy, and Y/N wrapped up her speech with a final, emotional note. "To every single person who's believed in me, from day one to now—this one's for you. Thank you for making my dreams come true!"
The applause was deafening as Y/N waved and started to walk off the stage. But just as she reached the edge, she paused and turned back to the microphone with a mischievous grin. "Oh, and Taylor," she added with a playful wink, "we're totally taking a selfie after this!"
The crowd burst into laughter, and Y/N sauntered off the stage, her heart feeling lighter than ever. As she glanced back toward the audience, she caught Tate's eye once more, and with a smile that was meant just for her, Y/N blew her a kiss.
This was just the beginning of her journey, and the best part? She knew she'd have Tate by her side for every step of the way.
