****Flashback****
Lunami sat quietly in her bed in the hospital's children's ward. She had been treated here for some time, and today another patient was coming to her room-a young boy she didn't know yet. She didn't know who he was or what was bothering him that he had ended up in the hospital, her child's mind was quite curious. But she also knew she had to be considerate, as her parents had taught her. All she knew was that the boy's name was Sylus, and he was ten years old, two years older than her. The door opened slowly, and Lunami became alert.
The door slowly creaks open before a nurse pops her head into the room. Nurse smiled softly . ,,He's here." With a nod, she exits the room, leaving the door open. A few seconds later, a young boy with grey hair pokes his head into the room, looking around before his gaze lands on Lunami, who's sitting on the bed. He seems a bit wary and hesitant, but he slowly makes his way into the room and stands awkwardly by the foot of the bed.
Lunami smiled at her sister. ,,Wow, I couldn't wait. I've been here alone before," she admitted, then winked at her. ,,Don't worry, Nurse, I'll take care of him and show him around," Lunami said, smiling, looking at the nurse.
The nurse smiles at the both of them, gently ruffling Lunami's hair. ,,Alright, but try to be gentle with him. He's a little shy." With that, the nurse exits the room, leaving the two young kids alone together. Now with no one else in the room, Sylus finally speaks up, rubbing the back of his neck. ,,H-Hey... I'm Sylus."
Lunami smiled at him, ran her fingers lightly through her red hair, then stood up. Sylus was perhaps a head taller. She walked over to him and held out her hand, as she had been taught to do by adults. ,,I am Lunami. And don't worry, the doctors and nurses here are very nice. You'll see that you won't miss anything," she said.
Sylus stares at Lunami's hand for a moment before gently shaking it. The touch of her hand was soft and warm, unlike what he was used to. He then took a step back and rubbed his neck once more. ,,Okay...I'll take your word for it." He looks around the room once more before his gaze eventually lands on the many plushies placed on the bed. He slowly points at them with a puzzled look on his face. ,,Why do you have so many stuffed animals...?"
Lunami turned behind her. ,,Well, I guess it's because I don't feel alone with them. You know, my parents don't have much time to be here, and since it's going to be Christmas," she said, pointing out the fact that snow was falling outside the windows, ,,most of the kids are with their families. My parents work too hard. And, well, the stuffed animals sort of replace them, at least I have someone to hug. But now you're here. I guess I won't be alone," she smiled at Sylus.
Sylus looks at the stuffed toys for a few seconds before he turns his attention back to Lunami, and he notices the smile she had on her face. He wasn't used to being smiled at, much less having someone who wanted him around... let alone having a friend. He slowly smiled back and nodded. ,,Yeah...I guess you won't be alone, anymore."
Lunami leaned behind him, on the things his sister had brought him before. ,,But you don't have one, wait... " she said, and then went back to her bed, where she picked up a stuffed animal. It was a crow, with big eyes and a soft black cloth. ,,Here, I'll lend you this one," she said, smiling at Sylus as she handed him the stuffed animal.
Sylus looked at the crow in surprise before gently taking it from Lunami's hand. He clutched it with a tight grip, gently running his fingers through the soft cloth. He had never owned a stuffed animal before, much less one that he liked. There was a certain level of comfort and warmth he felt just by holding it, and a small smile crept on his face. ,,Th-Thanks...this one's nice..."
Lunami smiled pleasantly. ,,My stuffed animals have a name. Maybe you should give this one a name, too," she said, as if to give a little advice.
Sylus raised an eyebrow at Lunami, surprised at the fact that she'd name her stuffed animals. He'd never thought to name things before, mainly because the concept of possessions was foreign to him. But the idea of naming this stuffed crow fascinated him, and he glanced down at the toy in his hands. He thought for a moment before a name popped into his head. ,,I think... I'll call him Mephisto..."
,,That's a nice name," the girl admitted, then rocked back on her tiptoes. ,,Why aren't your parents here with you?" She asked carefully, careful not to make it sound bad.
Sylus tensed up slightly when Lunami asked that question, causing him to grip Mephisto tighter. He didn't like talking about his parents, and he especially didn't want to talk about it to this girl he just met. He fidgeted a bit awkwardly before answering. ,,They're... busy. They had to work. Can we just drop the topic... please..?"
Lunami immediately nodded her head. ,,Of course, yes, sorry," she whispered, then reached out to him. ,,So you know what? What if I show you around? They have this cantina where they make amazing hot chocolate. I've got some money left over, can I invite you in?"
Sylus relaxed after she assured him that she'd drop the topic. He also flinched slightly when Lunami reached out to him but didn't pull away. The mention of hot chocolate immediately captured his attention, and he perked up at the invitation. ,,Hot chocolate... sure. Why not?"
,,Let's go. You'll see you won't regret it!" The girl said cheerfully and then headed out of the room with him.
Sylus quickly followed behind her, clutching Mephisto under his arm. As they made their way out of the room and through the halls, he glanced around at the environment. The stark, white walls, the faint scents of antiseptic and cleaning chemicals, and the occasional chatter of nurses in the background. It was so different from anything he'd ever experienced, but it was a good difference. And there was something about Lunami that made him feel... safe.
