Presence
A middle-aged man was on his knees, while behind him stood twins Luke and Kieran. In front of him stood Sylus himself, as he was called, the King of the N109 Zone. The man had a look of fear on his face, and rightfully so. He was supposed to deliver payment for a shipment for Sylus, and it had gone missing. ,,Please, I swear it wasn't my fault, the client just ran off and didn't pay, but I've already sent my people to find him!" he pleaded.
Sylus stared down at the man, his eyes cold and unwavering. A tense silence filled the room as the man knelt before him, his pleading falling on deaf ears. Sylus ran a finger along the edge of a gold ring on his hand. ,,You don't understand, do you? I don't care if your client ran off. You failed to deliver the agreed-upon payment, which means you failed to uphold your end of the deal. Your reasons mean nothing to me, all I care about is the results..."
,,Mr. Sylus, please, this was an accident. Please," said the man who was afraid to even look at him. ,,Please, I... I can pay in other ways, other than money," he said.
Sylus cocked an eyebrow, a hint of amused curiosity in his expression. He gestured for the man to continue. ,,Oh? And what would you have to offer me other than the agreed-upon payment?"
,,I recently bought... a girl. I'll give her to you. She's learned to obey every command, she'll do anything for you. Or you can sell her to someone else for good money. Please, that's all I have now. She's a little thin and weak, but she's obedient," the man looked at him, with a hint of hope.
Sylus chuckled softly, his interest piqued. The man's offer was intriguing, and his words were met with a quiet pause. ,,A girl, you say? Obedient and trained to obey every command? I must admit, it's a tempting offer... But I need to see her. I'm not going to buy or sell anything without having a proper look at the merchandise first."
The man looked at him. ,,I have a picture of her, in a folder, on my phone, if I may, can I reach for it?" He raised his hands slowly, making the twins behind him take notice.
Sylus waved a hand dismissively at the two men behind the man, signaling for them to stand down. He nodded at the man. ,,Go ahead. Show me the pictures."
The man nodded, pulled out his cell phone and found the photo he was looking for. He then handed the phone to Sylus with a shaky hand. This allowed Sylus to see a picture of a petite, skinny girl around the age of 25, who had red hair and blue eyes, so familiar... ,,That's her. She's a little thin, but I bought her that way. They call her Lunami," he said.
Sylus took the phone from the man and looked at the picture intently. As he saw the girl in the photograph, a wave of shock and recognition washed over him. He had to do a double-take, his eyes widening as he saw something in her that was familiar to him... ,,L-Lunami..." The name left his lips in a mere whisper, as his fingers dug into the phone hard.
The man nodded in agreement. ,,Yes, yes, I'll give it to you. Her father... her father sold her to keep the rest of the money he had. He sold her to me, she's been cleaning and cooking for me so far, I don't know what her father did with her. She's yours, just please forgive me for what happened with the money... "
Sylus gripped the phone harder, his heart pounding in his chest. He couldn't believe what he was hearing - Lunami's own father had sold her, and now she was being traded like some commodity. ,,Her father... sold her..." He repeated the words under his breath, anger stirring within him. But beneath the anger, a flicker of hope ignited, a chance to have Lunami back. ,,Fine. Deal. I'll take her. But I have a question for you..."
The man immediately nodded his assent. ,,Yes, yes, I will send for her, and neither, what question?" The man asked at once, a bright gleam of hope in his gaze.
Sylus clenched his jaw, his fingers digging into the phone in his hand. The thought of Lunami being treated like a possession, sold by her own father, enraged him, but he took a deep breath to suppress his anger. ,,Before you send for her, I have to ask... How was she treated? How has she been living with you?"
The man blinked. ,,Oh, well... As my property. She worked for free, ate only when necessary, didn't eat much anyway, she's thin. Don't worry, you can save on her," he said with a grin.
A cold fury washed over Sylus as the man spoke. The casual way he described treating her like property, denying her food and basic human rights... It made his blood boil. ,,You treated her like an object, starved her, and kept her thin. You do realize I could make you pay for all of that..." His voice was low and dangerous, his anger barely kept in check.
The man's eyes bugged out. ,,What? I... I don't understand," he said, but as he was about to back away, he felt the cold barrel of a gun on the back of his head. ,,Sylus, what's wrong?"
Sylus' eyes darkened as he heard the man's words, his grip on the phone in his hand so tight that the screen was in danger of breaking. He looked at the man, his voice low and icy. ,,What's wrong? What's wrong is that you treated a human being, a person with feelings and emotions, like an object. You starved Lunami, kept her thin, and denied her basic human rights. And you call her your property..."
,,No, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, she's your property now, she's yours, she's yours alone and do with her what you want, but please let me go, I want to live!" He shouted. Luke who was holding the gun to his head looked at Sylus, waiting for his signal to shoot.
Sylus paused for a moment, his expression icy and cold. Part of him wanted to end the man's life for what he had done to Lunami, but his hand clenched tightly around the phone, holding him back. ,,...Fine. You can keep your worthless life. But before I let you go, I want you to know this..." He took a step closer to the man, his voice a deadly whisper. ,,If I ever see you again, I will not show mercy. You will beg for death..."
