The Ark to some people seemed like a great place to live. It seemed like a place that would save them from everything bad. A place that gave you hope, peace, belonging, and a sense of familiarity. It was this place that built itself up to be their saving grace and without it they'd be lost.
Athena Solace didn't believe that for one second. Never had, never would. Not thanks to her parents anyway.
Katie and Leo Solace knew the truth, and they made sure that Athena did too.
Her parents were hard workers, they did everything they could to make sure they always had a meal on the table for her, even if that meant going days without eating something themselves. When she was younger, Athena never noticed this, but as she got older she started to spot the telltale signs.
It was at that point that Katie and Leo sat her down and taught her everything they knew. They told her about how unfair the treatment was on The Ark. They taught her how to be light on her feet and how to pick people's pockets without them ever finding out. They taught her how to read body language, how to make the difficult decisions when other people couldn't, how to have a voice.
More importantly, they taught her how to fight and how to stand up for herself.
This was one of the best things they had ever taught her. But it also happened to be the very thing that ended up being her downfall.
Athena Solace, at the big age of fourteen, found herself sat behind the locked door of her cell in the skybox repeatedly asking herself how she ended up here, of all places.
Of course, she knew exactly how it had happened. It was her own fault after all.
She had been the one to not properly check the empty room before she started her hand-to-hand combat training. She had been the one to accidentally attack the guard that walked in on her. She had been the one to apologies multiple times, even as the guard continued to beat on her once she was down on the floor. And she had been the one to slit his throat with her own handmade knife.
But that wasn't the point.
After all these years of being taught how to be stealthy, and smart, and strategic by her parents, she got herself caught and thrown in prison.
Athena was more pissed that she didn't get to say goodbye to her mother before they hauled her away.

Athena wasn't entirely sure just how long it had been since she was put in prison, but she knew it had been at least three years. The only reason she knew this was because her mum had managed to sneak her a birthday present when she turned seventeen.
She wanted to say that she hated the solitude of her cell. She wanted to say that she hated the higher-ups in The Ark for thinking this was the best way to deal with troubled kids, some not even troubled but just caught in a bad situation. Athena wanted to say all of these things and more but she couldn't bring herself to.
The cell wasn't exactly the worst thing. She had never been a very social kid, so not being able to talk to anyone didn't matter to her. She did miss the few friends she had however, and she wondered how they were doing now.
It was also the perfect size space for her to continue with the hand-to-hand combat her father had taught her growing up, and it was the perfect amount of quiet for her to loose herself in the pages of her birthday present.
The book had been a lifeline since her mum had got her it.
Though, that all changed the second she heard the familiar beep of her cell door unlocking.
Her head whipped up to face the two guards that entered while one hand shoved the small book under her pillow before they could see it.
"Prisoner 210, face the wall." One of the men said.
"What's happening? I'm not eighteen yet." Athena spoke up and refused to back down.
"Quiet. Hold out your right arm." The same man told her, placing down a box and pulling out a metal bracelet.
"Not until you tell me whats happening." She snapped at him.
"Don't make this hard." The other guard lowly mumbled as he pulled out his shock baton and pointed it at her.
Athena visibly gulped at this and turned to face the wall with her right hand held out to her side. She had her fair share of shocks with their batons over the years, and she wasn't about to take another one for something as small as a bracelet.
She couldn't stop her eyes from widening the second she stepped out of her cell. Every cell door was opened, kids being pulled out of them with matching bracelets and confused looks, some even knocked out and she guessed they were the ones that put up a fight. She couldn't blame them.
"Where are we going?" Athena asked, but she rolled her eyes when the guard just pushed her forward and grunted at her.
They never were the most talkative of people, and that's saying something coming from her.
The sound of shouting caught her attention and she snapped her head to the left, eyes instantly locking with a pair of green that matched her own. Katie Solace fought her way through the crowd of guards to reach her daughter. There was nothing that could stop her from reaching her.
Nothing had stopped her from bringing up her daughter how she wanted. Nothing had stopped her from raising her daughter to have a voice and fight against those she believed wrong. Nothing had stopped her from getting that present to her in her cell. And nothing was going to stop her from pulling her into her arms for what could be the last time.
"Mum." Athena almost cried into her shoulder once she shoved the guard off and grabbed the older woman.
"Athena." Katie whispered back, tightening her arms around her daughter so she could savour the moment. She memorised the way her daughter sunk into her hold, the way her face buried straight into her neck like it used to when she was younger. She memorised the way she grinned through the tears that threatened to fall, and the way she still had that sparkle in her eyes despite it all.
It didn't last long before the guards were trying to break them apart again.
Katie cupped her daughters cheeks and forced her too look her in the eye, thumbs brushing away the stray tears that fell before she lowered her voice. "Your father was right, Athena. Don't forget that. He was right this entire time. Remember everything we taught you, remember where you come from."
Athena scrunched her face up in confusion and went to reply, but before she could a guard roughly pulled her away from the only comforting hold she had and forcefully shoved her towards the direction the other kids went.
"Remember how much we love you, Athena. Remember who you are. He'd be so prou-" Katie shouted but her voice was cut off when the door slammed shut and sealed behind them.
Athena had to do everything in her power to stop herself from breaking down as she locked eyes with her mother one last time.
