"happy birthday!" without a warning you bursted into toms room, not even seconds after the clock hit 12am.
"hm?" he groaned and rolled over in his bed, being met with your excited self holding up a couple gift bags. he was disorientated, having already been asleep since 10pm on the dot, as usual.
"happy birthday," you smiled and walked over to the vacant space on his forest green bedsheets. "i know you hate birthdays but i couldn't resist."
tom let out a sigh, knowing if he tried to refuse your gift he simply wouldn't have it. "thank you," he sat up against his headboard revealing his toned stomach, the waistband of his boxers were visible over his pyjama bottoms. you were sat next to him like an idiot, your smiling stretching from ear to ear as you watched him unwrap his gifts. tom was a difficult person to shop for - and you only hoped that the presents you got him were good enough.
tom softly tore away at the black wrapping paper, he seemed to loathe anything that had a pop of colour so you kept it basic. inside was a black leather notebook, his name personalised in a glowing gold noted across the bottom. "a diary," he spoke. his callous fingers trailed over the engraved words, his eyes flickering up to you. "thank you."
"are you going to say thank you every time you open a gift?" you laughed, the noise filling up his room.
"i do have to show my appreciation, you know?" you could tell he was trying to hide back a smirk.
"shut up," you turned away, your cheeks arising with heat all from his charming gaze.
"you really did not need to get me so much," tom said. you turned back to him, not exactly sure what to say.
since he was a child, tom absolutely despised birthdays. he hated seeing other children celebrate with their ever so loving parents. it killed him, seeing the endless love they received on their special day. it made him only resentful towards his parents, leaving him without a second thought. birthdays were only a 'gentle' reminder of something he couldn't have. they reminded him of the dreadful days he spent in the orphanage, each and every birthday being spent as boring and isolated as the other. tom never got along with any other kids,
hardly ever spending his time socialising.rather, he spent time hauled up solitarily as he read books over and over. with the orphanage being a slightly terrible place, he only had limited access to books, rereading each and every single one over and over until he could retell each one perfectly. tom could only remember the day he first met you. he noticed you, but he didn't notice you properly until you almost fell getting into the small boat as you travelled from the train to hogwarts.
since then, the two of you had grown an extremely close bond. though tom would never admit, you were the ray of sunshine in his once isolated life. the first person to accept him for who he was, allowing him to finally be him around someone other than himself. soon after first meeting you, he became absolutely infatuated. never letting you leave his side - though he never vocalised it, and admittedly never would, your presence was the only one he ever craved. and could stand.
"you are too sweet," tom admired the delicate silver ring tucked into a black velvety box.
"i was hoping you'd like it," you shifted on his bed.
"you know i always love your presents. though i do not understand why you continue to gift me them," you shrugged at his words, knowing full well that gift giving was at the top of your list of love languages, though tom could never know about your feelings towards him.
"i like to make sure that you know i care about you," toms chest slightly tightened, unsure if it was a good or bad thing. "also it is your birthday."
"i am very aware. especially after you decided to interrupt my much needed sleep, but i suppose i can let you off this once," tom said. he lifted his bedsheets, signalling for you to join him.
