"For pretty eyes look for the good in others."
-Audrey HepburnHalston's family was a dream compared to mine. As soon as I walked down they welcomed me with open arms.
"Hello Alison." Said her dad shaking my hand. He was built with salt and pepper hair and a beard. His eyes were piercingly blue but somehow gentle. "I'm John."
"Hi!" I managed hoping I'd wiped off all my mascara .
"And I'm Alana." Said her mom also taking my hand. Her worried look basically proved that my $50 mascara wasn't built for waterworks. She was pretty, but not like my mother. She looked as if she had no makeup on. Her eyes were a duller gold version of Halston's and her auburn hair was pulled into a loose low ponytail. She didn't look old enough to be a mom.
"And this is Phoebe." The little blonde girl balanced on her hip smiled at me. She looked like a little blonde Halston.
"Hi Alsson!!" She said in her baby voice.
"Hi!" I said my instant mother kicking in. "How old are you Phoebe?"
"Two." She held up three fingers and we all laughed.
"Can Alison eat with us mom?" Halston asked.
"Of course!" Said Alana looking at me. "We're having eggplant Parmesan, is that okay?"
I nodded even though I wasn't really sure what that was.
"You girls can head upstairs while I get it ready!" She said heading toward the kitchen.
We bounded up the stairs and back into her room. She flopped down on her bed. I looked at her pictures. They were from all over the world. In one picture she was standing by a rocky ocean on a stormy day, a small white lighthouse behind her.
She came up behind me. "Those were from Maine." She pointed to the lighthouse picture And other pictures of her playing on a beach with girls in matching raincoats and jeans. "Who are they?" I asked pointing.
She sighed. "We lived in Maine for a couple years." I nodded, remembering her telling me that at lunch. "Those were my friends." She said it casually but sadly. Suddenly I actually felt bad for her. She probably got attached to places and people then had to pack up and leave. I stared at other pictures of her with girls in what looked like Italy, England, and Paris.I also saw ones were she stood in the middle of a group of toddlers in what I assumed was Haiti.
"Wow you really have been a lot of places."
"Yeah!" She said regaining her normal cheery self. She pointed to a picture of her next to a castle, dressed in a gorgeous white dress and hat.
"I watched Princess Kate and Prince William get married."
"Whoa." Was all I could say.
She continued, pointing to pictures of her at Stone Hedge, in Rio, in little boutiques in Germany and France. In all of them she was either with a group of smiling friends and family, or on a mission with a group of smiling little kids. It was all beautiful.
"Why did you guys move here?" I asked, brainstorming about taking pictures with her in New York City, I was dying to be on her wall for some reason.
"After phoebe was born we moved to Maine because we couldn't travel so much with her," she smiled at me, "then my dad was transferred here from his new job!" She shrugged. "My parents are gonna let me stay here until I graduate high school." She seemed genuinely happy, but her face darkened as she looked at the girls in the pictures. I suddenly felt bad. She had moved here, leaving all her old friends behind, and I had made her life miserable.
"Girls!" called her mom up the stairs. "Dinner's ready!!" I followed Halston into the kitchen. The long wood table was set and a big pan of what looked like black circles covered in lasagna sat in the middle, piping hot,
I sat down next to Halston. Before we dug in the family took my hands and started to pray, thanking go for the day and the food. I was amazing. I've always believed in a god, but this was totally different. I didn't even know how to pray. Maybe Halston could teach me.
