"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain."

Tonight my parents weren't home. Surprise, surprise. Just as I was about to eat one of my mother's instant skinny-licious meals Halston called.
"Hi!" I said.
"Hey," she paused, " you can eat over here again if you want, and it's Friday so you can sleep over." I thought about it. The egg-plant Parmesan was delicious, and I was dying to get to know Halston better.
"Really?" I asked
"Of course!" She said, "just bring your stuff and come on over!"
"Okay" I agreed, "be over in a bit."
I got a shower and packed a bag. Halston opened the door before I could even knock. She seemed eager for a sleepover to.
I followed her up to her room, as her mom called "Hi Alison!" From the kitchen.Putting my stuff down I looked at Halston. She broke the silence laughing.
"This is awkward."
"Sure is!" I laughed. We headed downstairs. Tonight her mom made grilled fish and chips, which was equally as delicious as the eggplant Parmesan.
After dinner and gelato for dessert Halston gave me a tour of the rest of the house. My favorite was the basement. It was painted in a bright mint color and the carpet was crisp white and fluffy. There were tall book shelves along with the sliding ladder they always have in movie library's. There was also a comfy chairs and a smoothie bar.
"I have a suprise to show you!" she smiled brightly and led me to a door by the bookshelves. When we opened it tiny barking hit me like a wave. Inside the room, two small chocolate colored puppies played and yelped.
"This is Aslan and Amika!" She held them up to me. They were so small and fluffy my heart instantly melted.
She handed me Amika to hold.
"They were at the vet yesterday, that's why you couldn't see them.
Amika licked my hand. I was extremely in awe of how cute the little things were. We played with them for a while, the little room was complete with a wooden play house that Mr. Bright had built for them.
After getting our puppy fix, we let them out of the room and went back to Halston's room. After watching Netflix, We laid around playing twenty questions.
I found out her favorite color was purple, her favorite animal was a dog, and her favorite place in the world was the beach house she lived in in Maine.
After a while Halston sat up.
"Is this all you people do at sleepovers?" She asked.
"Ummm, yeah?" I said.
She peeked out into the hallway, which was dark. It was midnight and her parents were downstairs watching a movie. I could hear Phoebe snoring in the room across the hall.
"Hate to say it but this is mind-numbing." She said whispering.
"What do you suggest we do?" I asked half joking.
She tiptoed over to the window and slid it open, then turned out the lights. The moon shone bright, lighting up the room.
"Come on!" She motioned for me to follow her as she crawled onto the roof. I stared.
"What?" I asked surprised. There was know way I was leaving the room, risking people seeing me in pajama shorts with no makeup.
Halston rolled her eyes. "Let's do something fun!"
"Like what?!!" I whisper shouted.
"I was thinking we'd tee-p one of the neighbors houses!" Her eyes were bright and she leaned in to grab a couple dark sweatshirts from the floor.I looked over at her bed, which she had expertly stuffed so it looked like we were sleeping there.
She wasn't done. "Then maybe we'd do something else."
"Are you crazy?" I asked, "what if we get caught?"
"My parents just started their movie, we have a while." She turned like that was a perfect explanation.
"Are you coming?"
I gave in and slid on a pair of flip-flops climbing onto the roof.
"This is a bad idea." I told her. I actually wanted to make a good impression on her parents.
"Relax." She said. "I used to always sneak out with my friends."
I sighed. I wanted to measure up to her old friends. "Fine."
"Glad you agreed." She threw my a packet of toilet paper. She had obviously been planning this for a while. She climbed down onto the porch and slid onto the ground quietly. I followed, perhaps not so quietly. We scurried out of the yard, hooded heads down to avoid being seen. A rush of adrenaline went through me. I was actually having fun.
We stopped in my front yard. A television light shone through my parents curtained window. No doubt my mom was watching herself on the news or something. I'd left a note to tell them I was sleeping over, not because they even cared, or I had to, but because I liked to think they actually cared. Halston leaned in.
"Do you want to?" She sounded excited. I nodded. For around ten minutes we scurried around my front yard spreading toilet paper around and throwing it into trees. I could see the look on my moms face as she simultaneously stared at the mess and called some service to clean it up.
I took all my anger out on the tee-p-ing. It was like therapy. Halston was a genius.
After we were done Halston through the evidence into our garbage tote. The garbage truck would be by tomorrow so there wouldn't be any evidence anyway. After that I looked at Halston.
"What now?" I asked. She scratched her chin. "First lets check on my parents."She speedily snuck across her lawn, head again down. She peeked a look through the window and gave me a thumbs up.
"We have like a hour and a half left." She said as she got back to me. "Let's go to the beach."
I looked at her again like she was crazy. The beach was right down the road, but it was still risky. It was small and dirty, because it looked out on the Hudson River.
"Okay." I said as she ran laughing down the road.
We reached it in no time. I never actually came down here. Again, it was dirty and smelled like dead fish.Which was a no-no for both my reputation and my mom. We had to climb down a steep hill of rocks to reach the sand. It was peaceful. The black water rushed onto the rocky sand and Manhattan glowed bright a crossed the water. Halston became quiet also.
"This is cool." She said.
"Yeah." I said, the fish smell wasn't even bothering me. Halston pulled out a Polaroid camera from her sweatshirt pocket.
"Cheese." She said jumping into a picture with me. I laughed, I felt calmness and happiness swelling in my chest. After more pictures of us dancing an laughing on the beach, Halston plopped down.
"Alison?" She asked.
"Yeah?" I said mesmerized once again my Manhattan's amber lights.
"Do you believe in god?"
"I don't know." I said honestly after a moment.
"Do you want to?" She was staring at me now. I felt loved.
"Yes." I breathed in.
we sat their for a while and she taught me about Jesus and showed me how to pray. I didn't know if she had planned this night just for this, but I didn't care. I was changed.
Goofing off she got down on her knee.
"Alison." She got fake teary eyed an pulled out a box. "I know we've only known each other for like 96 hours." She held back a laugh. I played along acting like I was about to cry and jumping up and down.
"Will you be my friend?" She opened the box to reveal an actual piece of jewelry. I was a silver cross, studded with red stones. I was taken aback. This was so goofy, but so heartwarming.
"Yes, my love!" I laughed. She laughed with me and put the necklace on me. She pulled her own out of her shirt and showed me.
"All of my old friends have one." She explained. "I'll show you pictures when we get back."
She then took another picture with me both of us showing off or necklaces and hugging like we'd known each other for ages. And I felt like we had. Walking back and telling jokes, I realized I found my best friend-and for the first time ever I prayed to god and thanked him.
