Shane’s eyes fluttered a few more times, that dreamy smile plastered onto his flawless, pimple free face. The girls were snickering. “He’s gonna flip out on you!” Sarah giggled with her snotty friends. Wow, she was a total bitch.
Surprisingly though, Shane saw me, went wide eyed, and bam, two seconds later he was sprawled out on the floor. “You almost gave me a heart attack, Kerri!” He complained, rubbing his sore neck. He’d been sleeping on it in a funny position. Another giggle from the annoying girls. “Whoa, when did we decide to have a party in my room? And you just kissed me, your good.” He whispered the last part into my ear.
I glared at the girls, arms crossed. “We didn’t.” I made sure to put emphasis on the word ‘we.’ “Here,” I offer him my hand and he takes it. I pull him up, light as a feather. “Thanks, only my second one.” I whisper back, receiving puzzled glances from Sarah and her posse.
“You’re stronger than I thought you’d be.” He smiles warmly at me and ruffles his disheveled hair, stifling a yawn. What did we expect? I had just woken him up from a dead sleep.
Sarah burst out into a fit of laughter, “Yeah, she’s probably stronger on the bed.” They laughed; I wasn’t standing for their childish behavior anymore.
“Look, just because I come from a different way, there’s no reason for ya’ll to be pickin’ on me!” I get dangerously close to Sarah’s body, but then remember that this isn’t New York and I’m much tougher than her, so I let things be and back off.
Shane wasn’t too pleased with his sister, which was clear. “We better go back to the slumber party.” I smile at Shane and he smiles back, not taking his death glare off of his little sister.
We go back to the game room, and take a seat on our sleeping bags. Megan handed each of the girl’s a Coke, and left me out-not very unusual. She smiled sweetly at me; here we go. “Oh, did I forget you? I’m sorry. I just thought you might prefer Kool-Aid.” All the girls erupted into laughter. I roll my eyes, and grab a can of Coke out of the mini fridge in the game room and take a quick swig out of it, wiping the pop residue off my lips. When I return towards the slumber party, LeighAnn is battling in a game of Pac-Man.
“1,000. That’s your all time score?” I question, incredulous that she thought she was good. We lived for this game back in the hood. I’d been our best player. She nodded, but I booty bumped her and grabbed the joy stick, starting a new game as I type in my name. “Watch how the pros do it!” I laugh slightly to myself and then play, as the girls watch wide eyed at my gaming experience.
When I finished, I was up to the top score, 100,000,000. “Oh my god!” Katie squealed, pointing to the screen with a shaky finger. “We thought we were good.” Sarah slaps Katie on the shoulder, glaring at her. Oh yeah, for a second I must have forgotten that none of us were friends here, and that I was only here thanks to Karen. I step away from the game, and get comfy underneath my sleeping bag.
The girls settle for watching a classic scary movie, hopefully they’d all fall asleep or be too engrossed in the movie so maybe I could sneak out and go to my own bedroom or anything besides this game room with girls that decided they wanted to judge me and they don’t even know me. I sigh as the girls scream whenever something ‘scary’ happens. If they thought a jack-o-lantern was scary, they’d hate my hometown.
“Can we please do something else?” Katie begs, closing her eyes and clutching the blankets tightly.
“This movie is scary as hell.” I wanted to laugh. These girls were such sissies!
“Oh god!” I mumble.
Soon enough, the girls fell asleep. Thank God. I lay there in Shane’s sleeping bag, thinking about how he had obviously slept in it before, which made it smell of him. I breathed in the scent of axe through my nose and sat up in the darkness, the many games of the game room the only light. As the movie continued to play, I maneuve my way around the numerous obstacles I had fears of tripping over.
Making my way through the silent house was difficult when you were trying not to wake anyone up. Stumbling to find my way through the darkness of the house, I knock over a vase. A door opens, revealing the glorious, shirtless, Shane. He looked disoriented and had a bat, trying to swing. Good thing Zack took me to those defense classes, and I knew when to duck and when not to.
“Shane?” I ask, attempting to snatch the bat away from him.
He rubbed the sleep from his eyes with one hand. “Oh, god. I’m sorry! I-I heard the noise and the vase and the-“ I cut him off.
“It’s fine!” I promise, giving him back his bat. “Nice weapon.” I laugh quietly and Shane grabs my wrist, dragging me quietly into his room, shutting the door behind him. I walk into his room and glance around. “Whoa, did you draw these?” I question, pointing to the amazing drawings on the wall. Flowers and wildlife and houses lay on his wall with thumb tacks. How had I missed this when I walked in the first time?
“Uh,” he rubbed his neck, embarrassed, “yeah. It’s nothing special…” He walks up behind me; I can smell his breath; minty and cool.
“Pft, these are amazing!” I compliment.
After that we just sit there for almost two hours, talking about random things. At one point, Shane grabs me a quilt off of his bed and hands me it so I can cover up. I yawn and look out at the stars. Shane has already practically fallen asleep. He looked so peaceful in his sleep. You’d never guess how bad he had to keep up his image of imperfection. I think he just wanted to be normal. Live without the troubles of ruining his apparent jock rep.
I wanted to live up to his sort of reputation. With that being my last thought, I nod off onto his shoulder.
