CHAPTER TEN:

SARAH'S P.O.V

Read authors note at the end! IMPORTANT!!

Enjoy..

I stood in the middle of the gymnasium, my eyes growing wider at the scene before me. Earlier this morning mom had warned them that they couldn’t be next to each other and now Shane was choosing stupid Kerri and all of her little newly acquired friends to play on his team? I told him, it’s not my fault if his reputation is seriously scarred.

My three best friends, LeighAnn, Megan, and Katie were all glancing at me, probably waiting for one of my usual outbursts. Stay calm, Sarah. Nothing’s going to happen. Their just playing a game of Extreme Soccer, right? As I continue to watch for once and keep my big trap shut, yes I totally just admitted I have one, I heard my name being called by another pretty cheerleader on our squad, Christina. “Thanks.” I smile at her and she smiles back, not much effort put into it.

Shane had the ball in his hands and continued to bob it up and down from hand to hand until the coach blew her whistle for the game to begin. As soon as it started, it was on. No way Kerri Stephens was beating me at my personal best sport besides cheer on the planet. I’d never in a million years admit to her that I knew she could probably beat me at basketball, even if my life depended on it.

As soon as the game ended, I sigh in relief when Coach blows the whistle and tells everyone to hit the showers. When everyone was inside the gym, including Kerri, I jog over to the coach. “Hey, coach? Do you mind if maybe we could have some sort of lock-in here in the school? I mean, at least go on a class trip? Like, a campout or Bahamas?” We totally had the money to do something like that, and I wanted all of the footage I could get of Kerri and Shane doing the forbidden things they were bound to do.

“We'll, see, the school is kind of going through I guess what you might call a bump in the road. You, know? We’re running out of money somewhat. We’d only need one fundraiser and then we could gain enough money to do something like that, yes.” Coach explained.

I roll my eyes and walk back into the locker room where the girls are all changing back into regular clothes. The clicking and locking of lockers is echoing in my ears, but it’s whatever. I put my clothes on and hand Megan my hair tie so I can throw my hair up and maybe reduce some of the sweat. It always very hot in California.

I slam my own locker and sneer at Kerri as me and my so called posse walk by. “You guys go on ahead, I’m supposed to be watching Kerri and Shane.” I dismiss them in a whisper, hiding behind the brick wall of the part of the school building beyond the girl’s locker room entrance.

“Hey, Kerri. Fancy a ride?” Shane’s voice boomed throughout the now vacant hallway. I peer my head over to see what Kerri’s reaction would be. They were impossibly close, almost. She shook her head. Yes, score one for the boys back home! “Why?” He whined, stomping his foot, resembling a five year old.

She stood there with her arms crossed. “Do you not remember last night?” At least the girl had some sense. My mom was crazy when it came to discipline. A guilty feeling rested in the pit of my stomach, but I pushed it away because I knew what I did was right. Kerri was black, Shane was white, and that’s all there was to it. No one in this town has ever mixed races before. Ever.

“Oh forget about it.” He dismissed the thought with his hand and one of his dashing smiles. Gag. “Besides, mom and dad aren’t even home. He grabbed Kerri’s hand and began pulling her towards the very expensive Porsche. My Porsche, well technically, after I got my license. Making Shane’s life miserable was my pleasure. With Kerri here, she was standing in my way and that’s why I despised her so much.

I had to admit though, she was one tough cookie. My hair still hurt from when she’d yanked me clear across the coffee table in my own living room. Sneakily following them as they walked hand in hand to the school’s parking lot. I grabbed my Droid out of my pocket and snapped a few pictures of them hand in hand.

Then, I run out in front of the two after dirtying myself up a bit and adding some dirt marks to my face, scraping my palms up against the black concrete on purpose to make it look as if I‘d just gotten beat up or mugged. “Shane, Shane, let me have a ride. These big kids just beat me up!” I squeeze my eyes so hard that I can spark tears.

Kerri releases Shane’s hand and her eyes go wide. Shane just kind of looks at me with a panicked expression. “That’s crazy, Kerri, go find them.” He says with a chuckle as he cleans me up. He should have never said that because he knows Kerri will. Hmm, this could be fun.

“It’s this girl…over there!” I pointed to the toughest girl around, Louise Lewis. She was toughest in our school. Kerri was small and petite and Louise would topple over Kerri like a tree. I watch in amazement and somewhat amusement as Kerri stomps off to the girl. Shane doesn’t move, only stares in horror.

“What did you do?” He whispered, glaring at me.

I shrug innocently. “Nothing.” I walk away with a smirk knowing Kerri will probably end up in the hospital tonight. Good, maybe she’ll go into a coma. I laugh and walk away, joining my best friends for the fight that was about to occur..
