“Shane!” I knock on Shane’s door and wait for a response, my hands already shaking. “Shane?” As soon as I go to knock again, I come face to face with a handsome head of hair and piercing blue eyes. I had been banging on the door so hard that I almost fall over. If it wasn’t for Shane catching me I probably would’ve. I smile sheepishly, and act like nothing’s happened.

He smirked. “You rang?” His eyebrow was cocked sexily up against his other one in a confused, innocent, expression.

“Uh, your parents wanna see us.” I hadn’t even laughed at his comment about me ringing his door because I was so damn nervous. Who wouldn’t be after the little brat Sarah had made her business to tell her parents what was going on between us, which was very little to none. Shane’s tall body climbs it’s way down the stairs, and I’m not far behind.

We take a seat opposite Karen and David as I wipe the sweat off my forehead. I never sweat this much unless I was in a very intense game of basketball, and even then it was nothing like this.

My palms were clammy and my cheeks were growing hotter by the second, waiting for them to just come up with a response. “Shane, Kerri, your not in any trouble,” Karen glanced at David with a fake smile behind her eyes, “yet.” Oh god. “But we’d just like to inform you that Sarah came to us with some very presentable information.” David’s veins were exploding out of his temples, in and out, in and out.

I drum my fingers nervously on the couch cushion. What presentable information might she be talking about? “Okay, mom, dad. Show us this information. Please, do tell what sister dear found this time.” Shane’s lines sounded very much rehearsed, and his words were dripping sarcasm.

“Don’t use that tone, Shane!” David snapped.

Karen rubbed his shoulders, an attempt to calm him down. “Look, your father means this.” She pulled a picture out from behind her back and I look at it closer. It’s a picture of Shane and I kissing from the night the dare had taken place just two evenings ago!

Shane ran a hand through his hair as if he wanted to pull every last strand of it out. “Dad, we didn’t even do anything!” He could protest all he wanted, but his dad held another picture out that said something completely otherwise. It was yet another picture, but this time it was me sleeping on Shane’s shoulder. Oh come on, those were cheap shots!

“Kerri, I have to say I’m very disappointed in you and what worries me most is that tomorrow is your first day of school.” Karen disapproved of me and she hadn’t even heard what I had to say. My nerves were so shot that I was pure angry. When I get mad, I get pissed and I don’t even know what I’m saying sometimes.

I stood up off of the couch. “We didn’t do anything, Karen!” I clench my fists, tears wanting to spill over. “Nothing happened!” I shot David a glare who was just smirking like he was enjoying watching this unfold. I thought he was here for me, and he was until he thought I was across the hall having sex with his only son.

Karen came closer to me, “You will not talk to me like that, I won’t stand for that in my house. You want to talk like that in New York you can all you want. Disrespect me and see what happens, missy. Us white people are a little more civilized…” She mumbled the last part, walking into the kitchen. David glared at me some more and then made his way into the kitchen.
