There she was. Sitting there where she told him that she loved someone else. Eagerly waiting for him to show up. He had the plan to hear her out and give up his miraculous, due to guilt, shame and overall knowing that she would never love him for his superhero identity or his civilian self. He had tried both and they both ended terribly. How could a girl so sweet, the everyday Ladybug, be the actual real ladybug. How could a model kid that grew up confined and never allowed to do anything without permission be given such an important role such as the Cat Miraculous? It was not his fate to stay as Chat noir. She made an amazing Ladybug and he knew she could do it on her own without him. He knew she would find someone more suitable for a partner than him. A partner that wouldn't betray her trust.
"Chat?" She turned around and saw him staring at her with a gloom face, restrained with thoughts.
How should he start? How could he talk to her calmly when all he wanted to do was collapse and cry. He wanted to apologize. He wanted her forgiveness. He wanted his partner.
Ladybug stood up and walked over to him, close enough to see her eyes sparkle in the moonlit sky. He could see that she was worried. She also seemed to be holding some sort of guilt. He knew why she felt guilty, she had already explained it to him as Adrien.
"Chat... I said some awful things to you last night. I'm sorry for saying those things to you but I-"
"Stop." He blurted out, cutting her off as she gave him a shocked expression.
"You had every right to react that way. I betrayed your trust, LB." He sighed, angry at himself.
"No I didn't! I told you to never come back. I didn't mean that. I like when you come over. I just... was angry and hurt. You were going to tell me who you were, I didn't want you to do that. I had to make you leave." Ladybug pleaded, extending her arm out to grab his arm.
Chat noir didn't flinch at her touch, no, he wanted to pull her into a hug and unleash all of the troubles in his heart that tugged every time she spoke. He didn't want this. He never wanted to fight with his partner.
"I understood how you felt. I felt guilty about it since I found out." He stepped forward, looking down at her face as a slight red blush spread across her face.
"How...How long did you know..?" She said, her eyes darted away.
"How long? Two fights ago maybe?" He said, not really remembering himself.
She didn't seem surprised. She seemed a little relieved than anything. Weird.
"I wanted to give my Miraculous back." Chat said, his voice trembling from sadness of his decision.
Her eyes darted back to him, surprised and wide.
"What?"
"I don't deserve to wear it anymore. I broke your trust Milady. How can we be partners with no trust?" Chat gave her a soft broken smile, hiding the tears that were starting to form.
"Chat... no." She pleaded.
"Plagg, claws-"
She heard him trying to detransform and closed her eyes and shot her hands to his mouth, preventing him from finishing his sentence. It caught Chat noir off guard, her soft touch against his mouth, warmed his heart. She really thought it best that he kept it? Why? Why would she not want someone else?
"Chat.. no. Please. I need you. You know you're irreplaceable." She opened her eyes and looked up at him, her hands still covering his mouth.
She could feel a small smile form under her hands and she let her hands go from his touch and rested them at her side.
"Thank you Milady." He smiled.
Ladybug smiled, turning around to sit back in her original spot before he had arrived. Chat followed her and sat beside her, looking up at the moon and stars that surrounded them.
They were quiet. She rested her head on his shoulder and he relaxed, feeling better than he had in days. The guilt of knowing had lifted. Though for some reason he felt it still not good enough. He wanted more.
Was that selfish of him? His heart thumped faster as he looked down at her, her eyes closed just enjoying the silence.
"Mari?" She glanced up at him.
Chat noir shifted, causing her to lift her head and look at him.
"I need you to know. I know you in real life. You sit-"
"Chat. I told you I don't want to know."
"You need to. It's hurting me that I know who you are and you don't know who I am." Chat pleaded, putting his hand on top of hers that rested on the concrete between them. Ladybug looked down at her hand and looked up to Chat who was a lot closer to her face than she originally realized. Her face flushed red, almost matching the tone of her mask.
"Who are you?" Ladybug finally asked in a quiet voice. Chat gave a soft smile.
