The soft hum of wedding chants surrounded Subhadra, but they barely reached her ears. Her body moved as if in a trance, her hands trembling as she took the sacred thread, her eyes fixed on the fire burning between her and Arjun. It was happening. She had accepted the proposal. She had given in, knowing full well this wasn’t a marriage of love but of control. A shackle, not a bond.
Arjun stood beside her, a towering presence, his expression a mask of cold determination. His gaze never left her, as if daring her to object. But her silence was the only answer he needed.
Suddenly, there was a commotion. The rhythmic sounds of the mantras were interrupted by hurried footsteps. Subhadra's heart clenched as she saw them—her family, their faces painted with shock and confusion, being ushered in by Arjun’s guards. Her mother gasped, hands flying to her mouth, eyes wide with disbelief. Her father stood frozen, a mixture of anger and hurt twisting his features.
“Subhadra!” Her mother’s voice was hoarse, trembling with the weight of a thousand unsaid words. “What… what is this? How could you—”
Before she could finish, Arjun’s voice cut through the tension, cold and devoid of any remorse. “They’re here to witness it. Your family should see this union.”
Subhadra’s throat tightened as she met her father’s gaze. His eyes burned with betrayal. He had always trusted her, always believed she would make the right choices. And now, seeing her at this mandap, beside a man who had taken her not out of love but out of some cruel desire for possession—it shattered him.
“Is this what you wanted, Subhadra?” her father demanded, his voice shaking with fury. “To marry him like this? Without us? Without love?”
Tears welled in Subhadra’s eyes, but she couldn’t answer. The words were stuck in her throat, a lump of regret and helplessness. She had agreed to this, but at what cost? She had sacrificed herself, her agency, and now her family was paying the price too.
Silence.” Arjun’s voice was sharp, cutting through the air like a knife. He turned, his gaze ice-cold, unyielding. “This marriage is happening. Nothing will stop it.”The priest hesitated, unsure of whether to proceed with the rituals amidst the chaos, but a single glance from Arjun told him all he needed to know. The ceremony continued, but the air was thick with tension.
As the final prayers were uttered and the vows were sealed, Subhadra’s heart sank deeper into despair. This was supposed to be a moment of unity, of love. Instead, it felt like the closing of a door, locking her in a prison she may never escape.
Her family stood there, helpless and broken, watching the daughter they once knew disappear behind the weight of a loveless union. And with every passing second, Subhadra felt the chains tighten, binding her not just to Arjun, but to the choice she could never take back.
____________________The gates of the Rai mansion loomed ahead as Subhadra approached, her heart heavy with uncertainty. She glanced at Arjun beside her, his expression unreadable, his jaw set in the same cold, determined line it had been since the wedding. He hadn’t spoken to her since the ceremony, and the silence between them was suffocating.
As they crossed the threshold of the grand estate, Subhadra was greeted by the sight of Mr. and Mrs. Rai, standing together at the entrance, their faces softened with forced smiles. Though they had been informed of the sudden marriage, the shock was still visible in their eyes. Yet, they made an effort to put on a warm front, to welcome their new daughter-in-law into their home.
“Subhadra,” Mrs. Rai said warmly, stepping forward to take her hand, “Welcome to our family.” Her grip was gentle, and her eyes held a kindness that Subhadra hadn’t expected. “We know this… wasn’t how you imagined things, but you’re a part of this family now.”
