He stepped closer, his eyes tracing the familiar lines of her face. It wasn’t Riya. It wasn’t the woman his family assumed had left him broken. No, the truth was far more complex, far more painful. This was a different woman, someone who had been much more to him than anyone knew.

Subhadra.

He stared at the wall, at the photos of the woman who now carried his name, the same woman he had sworn to marry only as an act of revenge. And yet, here she was in his secret room, immortalized in his most private memories.

How had they come to this? He had loved her once, deeply and completely. But something had shattered between them—something neither of them had ever spoken of, something that had driven them apart before he could ever claim her. She had slipped through his fingers, and now, he had trapped her in a marriage meant to prove a point, to reclaim control. But in this room, surrounded by these memories, the cold truth of his own heartache gripped him.

Arjun ran a hand over his face, trying to clear the fog of confusion. He didn’t want to think about Subhadra like this—not now, not after everything that had happened. She was supposed to be a tool, a pawn in the game he had created to bury the pain of losing her. But standing here, staring at the evidence of his once-buried love, the truth pressed down on him, suffocating.

He sank to the floor, his back against the wall, his knees drawn to his chest. His mind was spinning, the memories colliding with the present. How had it come to this? He had once loved her so completely, but now all that remained was bitterness and confusion.

The quiet of the room weighed heavy on him, and exhaustion crept in. Arjun closed his eyes, letting the soft hum of the past lull him into an uneasy sleep. As he drifted off, the memories of Subhadra danced behind his eyelids—flashes of her smile, the sound of her laughter, and the way she had once looked at him, before everything had gone wrong.

But now, that woman was gone. In her place stood the silent, defiant bride who had married him today, not out of love, but out of duty—or perhaps even resignation.

As sleep overtook him, the photographs remained on the wall, their secret known only to him, their story hidden from the rest of the world. Subhadra had once been everything to him. And now, she was his wife, though the distance between them had never felt greater.

Next day :

Arjun emerged from the secret room, his expression unreadable. He saw Subhadra moving about in their shared space, but their eyes didn’t meet. She gathered herself and silently made her way downstairs to the kitchen, ready to prepare her first breakfast as the new daughter-in-law of the house.

As she stepped into the bright, bustling kitchen, the air was filled with the warmth of morning chatter. Mr. Rai was at the table reading his newspaper, Mrs. Rai gave her a welcoming smile, and Priya and Rohan were seated nearby, playfully arguing over something trivial.

"Good morning, beta," Mrs. Rai greeted warmly, rising to help her. “You don’t need to worry about the kitchen today, but it’s sweet of you to want to prepare breakfast. We’re all eager to taste your cooking."

Subhadra smiled softly. "Thank you, Ma. I wanted to do something for the family today."

Rohan grinned from his seat, nudging Priya. “Finally! We’ll have a break from Priya’s overcooked toast,” he teased.

Priya playfully smacked his arm. “At least I try. Don’t complain when you’re eating twice as much.”

The light banter eased some of Subhadra’s nerves, but she could still feel the weight of Arjun’s absence. The warmth of the Rai family was evident, but Arjun’s cold distance continued to linger in the back of her mind.

Mrs. Rai watched her thoughtfully, sensing the unspoken tension. “Subhadra, beta, take your time. We’re here for you. You’re a part of this family now,” she said, her voice gentle yet knowing.

Subhadra nodded, grateful for the support but still carrying the burden of everything that remained unsaid between her and Arjun.
As Subhadra moved around the kitchen, preparing breakfast, she glanced at the empty dining chair Arjun usually occupied. Her heart sank slightly, but she masked her feelings with a smile as she set the table. The rest of the family was animated with morning conversation, but Arjun’s absence weighed heavily on her mind.
