where it all began

Light, just fourteen years old, was sitting on his bedroom floor. It was late and his parents and sister were already asleep.

he was bored. He couldn't sleep and he had already finished all his homework for the next day, so he turned on his computer to play a game. That's when he saw it. Sitting near the corner of his room was something that hadn't been there that morning. A notebook, black and leatherbound with a red ribbon marking a page in the middle. His curiosity peaked, Light walked over to pick it up.

it was heavier than it looked, and the leather cover was smooth under his fingers. He looked at the front cover where there was a single word written, STRAIGHT NOTE. He carefully opened it, revealing the words written on the inside cover in neat, almost beautiful calligraphy.

He could vaguely read that it was some kind of instruction manual, with many rules. However, before he had a chance to read too much, his eyes landed on a rule at the bottom that made his heart skip a beat.

"The gay human whose name is written in this note shall turn straight." he read, blinking his eyes to make sure he wasn't imagining it. He quickly turned back to the front cover. It really said death note. Light stood there, just staring at the book in his hands, shock settling in.

He glanced at the first page and reread the main rule. He had found a magical notebook that could change people's sexualities. He let out a shaky breath. He had no reason to think the rules were fake, and if they were real... well it would be wrong to not use it, right? He sat back down on the floor, his back against his bed, and started flipping through the pages.

As he turned the pages he saw names, dates, and different ways of turning straight written out. Light felt a small sense of power as he thought of what he could do with the notebook. It was exciting and a bit scary. Then he had an idea. He should test it. What better way to figure out if something works than to do something low stakes like this. He chuckled to himself and then quickly composed his features into a serious expression and looked down at the straight note again.

He suddenly heard a soft thumping sound and looked towards the trapdoor that led to the attic. He tilted his head, listening intently. The sound came again, and this time Light saw the trapdoor shake slightly.

he froze, every muscle tensing. What the heck was up there? He slowly stood up, trying to keep quiet, and walked over as silently as possible to the bottom of the steps. He could hear whispering coming from the other side of the door.

His heart was beating fast, but he tried to keep his breathing even. He reached toward the trap door and grabbed the latch. He slowly started to pull it down, the whispering getting a bit louder as he did.

Light squinted, trying to see what was in the small storage space above him. The attic was pitch black, except for a sliver of light that came in from the room. His grip tightened on the latch and he leaned forward, trying to get a better look.

He heard another thump and the whispering got louder, and he caught a flash of something moving. He felt the panic start to rise in his chest. Someone really is up there. He started to back up silently when the door suddenly creaked open and the whispering stopped. Light froze, his body locked up in fear.

He could barely make out a figure standing at the top of the stairs, shrouded in shadows. He heard quiet but heavy breathing coming from the figure and his heart nearly stopped as he realized that someone had been up there the entire time. He held his breath, not daring to make a sound and hoping desperately they wouldn't notice him.

he almost let out a noise of surprise before his mind caught up with his eyes. The person standing on the top step was a shinigami. Light was frozen in place, eyes wide as he stared up at the grim reaper. He hadn't thought this would actually work, and now one of the creatures from the note was standing in front of him.
