Down.

25.

This sign of the zodiac has no connection with fishes.

Jade withdraws the pencil from between her teeth once she checks the number of boxes. Six.

Lazily, she scribbles "P-I-S-C-E-S" inside the boxes, muffling another yawn. She puts the pen back in her mouth, chewing the bottom, as she moves on to the next word.

Down.

26.

A preservative of tee—

Startled, the pen falls out of her mouth and drops onto the floor, as the door suddenly bursts open.

Of course, it's Peter.

"Hey, what'd you do now?"

"What, I can't come in here unless I'm hurt?"

"I am a doctor, you know."

"There's plenty of doctors in here." He rolls his eyes, walking to the front of her desk.

"But I'm your favourite, am I not?"

"Sure. Whatever helps you sleep." He shrugs, and everything about him seems pretty normal. That is until Peter casually places an old brass candlestand on her desk.

"Uhh, what's that?"

"A candlestand." He states, matter-of-factly, placing a candle in the cavity. "And that's a candle."

"Thanks for telling me, Peter. Perhaps if you could also help me out with why?"

No response. He simply takes a lighter out of his pocket and walks out, leaving Jade to wonder as to what the hell is going on. Jade waits, staring at the details engraved on the candlestand placed at the centre of her desk. But when she decides it's been long enough, she lifts herself from her chair to look for Peter.

That is when he barges in again, hiding something behind his back this time.

"Do you always have to make a grand entry?"

He shrugs.

"Be honest, did you steal that lighter from Brenner?"

"It's not important." He shakes his head, taking slow steps towards her, hands still holding whatever he'd walked in with.

"You did, didn't you?" She grins.

"Shush. I'll keep it back in his office. Now—"

"I'm so proud of you!" She practically squeals, her eyes sparkling with glee.

"Thanks, Jade. Now sit." He gestures to the chair beside her.

"Okay!" She jumps onto her chair, the smile not leaving her bony face. "Now, what's all this?"

In the dim lighting of the old, depressing room surrounded with yellowed-white tiles of the lab, Jade watches Peter place a plate of mashed potatoes— one of the very few things they provided in the lab— in front of her. The somewhat runny potatoes are put together in a shabby rectangle, with two boiled peas and long pieces of carrots that form a smile on top, and as Jade takes her time to adore the cute gesture in front of her, Peter lights up the candle on her desk.

After a moment of taking it all in, she says, "So what is this, some romantic candle-lit dinner?"

"Sure." He laughs.

Jade had always been quite pathetic when it came to accepting gifts and gestures. So naturally, instead of thanking Peter, she finds herself saying, "I help you with one orgasm, and you're taking me to dinner. What next, are you gonna propose to me?"
