Pushing my key into the lock, I twisted and the door rattled. Stupid fucking lock. I rattle it a few more times and it clicks. Between this and the leaks, I wondered what I was even paying rent for anymore.

"Hi Andi," My neighbours kid says from the stairs across from my door. She was maybe 16 now & growing so fast. I've lived in this apartment building for a couple of years now, since highschool. They moved in maybe a week after me. It used to be an old motel. It never really got fixed up, there was just more demand for housing than demand for a dirty place to sleep.

"Hi Georgia." I smile and wave up at her. "Aren't you cold? What're you doing out here?" I pull my door back over.

"Nah, I'm okay Andi. Dad's upset at Tom again." She types away on her phone. Tom was her older brother, maybe a year older than me, 25. I didn't know much about him besides he smokes a lot of pot and he's never home. I guess he's home again.

Tom was quiet, in the past few years we had only ever exchanged "Hi's" "Good morning's" and "How are you's", the usual small talk. He was rarely here, I knew when he was home because he'd smoke in the stairwell and the smell of pot would drift under my door.

It didn't bother me, I didn't smoke but I didn't hate the smell, it was kind of comforting to know he was around. He was tall, almost 6 foot and towered over me. he had dark eyes and dark brown hair.

"Do you wanna come hang out with me for a while?" I push the door a little and Georgia walks over. "Can I watch Criminal Minds?" she makes her way through the door and straight over to the couch, her usual position. "When have I ever said no to you?" I stroke her hair behind her and she smiles.

I might be the only 24 year old that still watches DVDs. I take out the disc and put it in the player, handing her the remote.

This has become a weekly ritual. I added box sets of shows to my shopping list for things to look out for a while ago. So far we're only missing one season of Mindhunter and The Walking Dead and two more seasons of Orphan Black.

"Are you ok here while I go get dressed?" She nods, entranced in the TV already. I laugh to myself. She was a sweet girl.

Georgia was probably my only friend here in Douglas, despite the 8 year age gap. We were each others personal therapists.

My apartment was tiny, one room connected to a lounge / kitchen area. It was cheap and did the trick. I had a couch and a TV, the basics and a bed. It was just me here, and it was enough.

I peel my work clothes off my body and get in the shower. The pipes clank as the water comes out cold, I let it run for 5 minutes while it heats up.

I undo my long blonde hair and watch it fall over my shoulders, I was due for a haircut. I pick at my skin and pluck a few stray eyebrow hairs. My freckles hide my acne scars well.

I think about that girl from the bar. Elle? Ellie? What were they all doing here? I'd never seen them before.

They weren't the usual crowd that would come in to Wild West.

I get in the shower and let the warmth hug me. I never want to leave.

Black Carhartt hoodie over blue jeans & some white nikes was the look I went for. "Chill drinks" was Macey's description. I knew this would be anything but chill. I leave my keys on the bench and get ready to head out.

"George? You ready for bed?" No response.

I make my way over to the couch, she's asleep. I throw a blanket over her and tuck her in, quickly writing a note for her.
