CHAPTER 07

FLASHBACK

“Coming through! Come on, Luther!” Allison yelled running down the stairs. “How will the Umbrella Academy ever become an effective crime deterrent if we can't even leave the house on time for missions?” Dad scolded us trying to get us to hurry up. I was in my room trying to find my shoes. “Mom!” I called running past Vanya’s room. I stopped to give her thumbs up before rushing into Klau’s room. “Klaus have you seen my- what the hell?” I asked shocked seeing him jumping on the bed possibly high as a kite while his drawer was on fire. “Oh! Klaus!” Mom said shaking her head and used a cloth to put it out. “Thank you, Mother.” Klaus said continuing to giggle. I checked under his bed for my shoes, but they weren’t there. “Are you sure you didn’t leave them in Benny boo’s room?” he teased. “Shut up Klaus.” I mumbled running out of his room again. “Mom, have you seen my shoes?” I asked seeing her helping Ben zip his mission uniform. “Did you check on the rooftop?” She asked knowingly. I saw Ben smile cheekily. “Thanks mom.” I kissed her cheek and teleported away to find the shoes. Funnily enough, it was there on the blanket where Ben and I had used when watching the stars at night. I smiled rushing back down to join the others after quickly putting them on.

END OF FLASHBACK

I sat next to Diego who was lost in thought in his old room. When we were kids, Diego had a stuttering problem. Dad continuously criticized him for it up to a point where he would secretly cry at night. My room was closest to his so I could hear him try to practice until late night. I always wanted to help but he never wanted us to know. But mom, she knew. She always knew. She always helped him and made sure he knew she was proud of him. I knew Diego was taking this hard. “I won’t let them do that to Mom.” I said softly giving his hand a small squeeze. “She was the only one in this miserable house that actually cared about us and showed it.” Diego said sadly. “Remember how she used to bake us 7 cupcakes on our birthday with a candle each? How she and pogo distracted Dad so we could celebrate our birthday.” Diego reminded. “Yeah, she even sewed us hankies… mine had embroidered stars and moon… I remember Klaus… he got his name in cursive and oh! Ben got a cute octopus design.” I added smiling. “You know… she knew about it.” Diego said softly. “About what?” “About you and Ben… she’s always leave extra food lying around for you and Ben or for Allison and Luther for you guy’s secret dates. Heck! I think even Pogo knew. They never said anything to dad. Even if they were programmed or controlled by him, they never betrayed us.” Diego said. I nodded. “Yeah… but… I think Dad knew. Or at least had suspicions. Not because mom or pogo said, because he always knew. And I still don’t understand how.”

I was in my room meditating. My mind was disturbed. Unclear and chaotic. Usually when my mind was restless I meditate to clear my head. It was something Dad taught me to, ever since he discovered my mind reading powers. It was difficult to concentrate or think when I could hear everyone’s thoughts all the time. It used to drain my energy up to a point I passed out or got nosebleeds. At first it was hard but gradually it became easier to control accidentally getting into other’s heads. You were just starting to relax when suddenly gun shots were heard on the corridor. I rushed out to see two weirdos in animal masks shooting at Diego. “Dee!” I yelled using my powers to knock a guy down. The other masked guy started shooting at me so I ducked beside a couch. Luther and Allison rushed in and started attacking them. “Who the hell are these guys?” Allison asked as Luther threw one across the room. “You're welcome.” Luther said walking up to Diego. “I was doing fine.” “Guys! Less shouting more fighting!” I yelled as they started shooting at us again. We ran separate ways to distract them. I saw Luther being floor slammed by the one with a bear mask. I jumped off the balcony and kicked him off Luther. I saw Vanya down on the ground and helped her up. “Go go hide!” I said urging her to safety. I threw kicks and punches, but he wasn’t stopping. I used my powers to slow him down but he grabbed me and threw me across the room. I gasped softly seeing him lift Luther and slammed him hard on the ground. I rushed up to him and helped him up. “Luther! Come on, Luther, get up.” Allison and Diego helped me get him up. We looked up to see that other bitch in mask broke the chandelier rope. Luther pushed us all away into safety when the chandelier landed straight on his back. “Luther!” we rushed to help him up. I pushed the metals off him with my powers. Luther stood up, his larger cloak torn, it fell of revealing his body. His whole body was covered in hair. We all stood shocked. He looked straight at Allison for a moment and walked past us and ran upstairs. “Did you know?” Vanya asked Allison softly. I was still rooted in my place too shocked to comprehend everything. I didn’t even realize I had a nosebleed. “Shit. Mom.” Diego said running to check on her. I wiped my nose on my and sat on the couch exhausted. I can’t believe I couldn’t take down two masked intruders. Like how did we lose so badly… there were four of us… I should have kept up with my physical training at least… then again, I never thought I’d have to fight again. “Who were those people?” Vanya asked putting ice on his wound. “I don't know. But we are lucky to be alive.” Allison said tiredly. “Diego?” Allison called when he came back. I looked up at him. “What are you still doing here?” Diego asked Vanya. “Diego!” I warned but he ignored me. “I'm just trying to help.” Vanya replied. “No, you could've been killed. Or gotten any of us killed. She is a liability.” Diego yelled angrily. “Allison? Cassie?” Vanya looked at us. “Diego means… you could get hurt…” I said slowly. “I think what he's trying to say is that this kind of stuff is dangerous. You're just...” Allison started but Vanya cut her off. “Not like you.” “That’s not what we’re saying Vanya.” I said starting to feel annoyed. For god’s sake! We’re just concerned for her safety! “No, that's not what I... Vanya, wait.” Allison stood up following her when Vanya left. “Let her go. It's for the best.” Diego said as she left the academy.

Sorry for the short update. There wasn't any Ben × Cassie moments here but there will be few cute moments in the other chapters.
