Katerina walked through the familiar corridors of the helicarrier, listening to the bustling activity in the rooms nearby as she strolled out onto the main deck to meet with her friend and ex-colleague, Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, as they awaited their new arrivals.
"Hey there, stranger" called out Natasha as soon as she spotted Katerina approaching her.
"Hello to you too, Romanoff. When are Coulson and the Captain arriving?" She responded, brushing a strand of her long brunette hair behind her ear absentmindedly.
"Any minute now. Speaking of them, here they are" Natasha turned around to face the quinjet landing nearby. Katerina turned to face the quinjet, watching as Captain America, dressed in informal clothes that tightly hugged his muscular frame, stepped out, closely followed by Agent Coulson, one of Katerina's few friends from her days as a SHIELD agent.
"Captain, this is Agent Romanoff and Agent Raven" Coulson introduced Steve to the duo, both of whom watched him with crossed arms, Natasha with a neutral expression, observing him and Katerina with a similarly neutral but mildly intimidating expression.
"Please, just call me Steve. It's a pleasure to meet both of you, ladies" Steve responded, ever the gentleman.
"Coulson, they want you on the bridge. They're starting the face trace" Natasha said, ignoring Steve.
"See you later, then" Coulson responded before walking away, leaving Steve standing awkwardly with the two spies.
"There was quite a buzz around here, finding you in the ice" Natasha said as she walked towards the edge of the helicarrier "I thought Coulson was gonna swoon. Has he asked you to sign his Captain America trading cards yet?"
"Trading cards?" Steve asked in surprise, following Natasha to the edge.
"They're vintage, he's very proud of them" Katerina added, walking alongside Natasha, her eyes scanning around and immediately spotting a nervous looking Dr. Banner, his head turning every direction as he wandered around like a lost puppy.
"Dr. Banner" Steve called out to him, making his head turn towards the trio and head over to them.
"Hi" the nervous scientist replied, shaking Steve's hand "They told me you'd be coming"
"Word is you can find the cube" Steve answered.
"Is that the only word on me?" Bruce shifted nervously. Natasha briefly turned away and pressed her earpiece, most likely to recieve an order of some kind as Katerina watched curiously.
Katerina's attention is distracted from the redhead as Steve talks again "Only word I care about"
Taking the sentiment, Bruce replies "It must be strange for you, all of this"
A group of agents run past and both Katerina and Steve smile fondly, each reminiscing on past days, the army for Steve, SHIELD for Katerina. Steve replies after a moment "Well, this is actually kind of familiar"
The conversation is abruptly stopped as Natasha steps back over to the trio "Gentlemen, lady" She turns to look at Katerina briefly "You might want to step inside in a minute. It's gonna get a little hard to breathe"
Katerina watches in mild interest as all the agents on deck begin to strap down all the quinjets and put on oxygen masks as the Helicarrier begins to emit a rumbling sound and shake.
She focuses back on the others as she hears Steve speaking "Is this a submarine?"
She resists smiling as she hears Bruce's incredulous and slightly sarcastic voice "They want to put me submerged, pressurised metal container?"
Both of the boys move closer to the edge, watching in fascination as four huge lift fans appear from under the water as the Helicarrier becomes airborne.
Bruce shakes his head and groans "Oh no, this is much worse" as Katerina and Natasha share a secret smile at their reactions.
Katerina watches again in fascination as the Helicarrier becomes covered in reflective panels, hiding its presence before being ushered inside by Natasha, being led to the bridge, where she raises an eyebrow at the number of agents all at computers inside. Natasha looks back at the three newcomers with a slight smile as Fury, SHIELD's director, approaches them.
"Gentlemen, Agent" he nods at Katerina. Steve walks over to Fury and discreetly hands him ten bucks, to which Katerina raises an eyebrow at. Steve then wanders off, marvelling at the technology inside, whilst Katerina notices Agent Maria Hill watching him with mild suspicion. Katerina then wanders over to Natasha, who is crouched down beside a computer with a picture of who she presumes to be Agent Barton and swiping left, looking at the stats that appear, no longer paying attention to Fury.
"That Agent Barton?" Katerina questions, making Natasha jump and Katerina smile slightly.
"Yup. I'm still surprised you didn't meet him whilst you still worked here" Natasha replies as Katerina shrugs and turns back towards Fury as Agent Coulson approaches.
"We're sweeping every wirelessly accessible camera on the planet. Cellphones, laptops. If it's connected to a satellite, it's eyes and ears for us" he explains.
Natasha turns her head to the group, still crouching and says in a worried tone "That's still not gonna find them in time"
Katerina crouches down beside her, no longer paying attention to the conversation again as Bruce starts talking about something science that doesn't really involve her, more focused on comforting Natasha. "He meant a lot to you, didn't he?"
Natasha laughs softly "I owe him my life. He made a different call when Fury set a kill-on-sight order for me, brought me to the Triskelion and helped convince Fury to let me become an agent. You helped too, even without having fully met me"
Katerina shrugs "I was in a similar scenario when I joined. Besides, those cells suck, no teenager deserves to be locked in one for extended periods of time"
Both agents turn back to Fury and stand up as he barks out orders "Agent Romanoff, escort Doctor Banner to his lab. Agent Raven, we have an updated combat suit for you and the Captain. Escort him over, you know the layout already"
Katerina and Natasha go their separate ways, both towards hopeless boys gawking at the bridge, one a man out of time, in a new era, the other a mild scientist with impressive anger issues.
Katerina nudges Steve "Sorry to interrupt your sightseeing, Captain, but we have outfits to try on"
"No problem, Agent Raven, lead the way" he replies.
"It's just Katerina, Captain, no need for the formalities" She responds with a slight smile as she starts walking.
"Then please just call me Steve, Katerina" he responds with a similar smile on his face as he follows behind.
