Inside the quinjet, the four prepare for the oncoming battle, Natasha and Clint piloting the jet whilst Steve hovers behind them and Katerina sits in the back, effortlessly and methodically checking her weapons, a dual set of pistols, a rectractable bo staff and several knives. Once done, she looks up and watches as the quinjet navigates through New York as Chitauri forces rampage through the streets.
"Stark, we're heading north east" Natasha says into her comms device.
"What, did you stop for drive-through? Swing up park, I'm gonna lay 'em out for you" Tony quickly responds as he flies through the streets of New York, tailed by several Chitauri chariots.
As the quinjet approaches the centre of New York, Clint looks out his window and says grimly "Yeah"
"See them" Natasha says into her comms as Clint banks the jet towards Stark Tower, aiming the minigun at Loki. However, before he can take a shot, Loki aims the sceptre at the jet and fires a blast of energy, hitting one of the wings of the jet, which catches fire. Katerina holds on tight to her seat as Clint attempts to maneuvre the jet as it spins and falls from the sky, eventually slamming into the streets. The four climb out of the fallen quinjet, all of them with weapons in hand, stepping out in the middle of an empty four-way street.
The silence is broken as a deep, ringing roar echoes through the deserted streets as a Chitauri Leviathon flies out from the portal, its shadow falling over the four, who look up as Chitauri soldiers drop from the sky. All four immediately engage serious mode, fighting off the soldiers as they fire energy rifles at innocent civillians.
"Stark, are you seeing this?" Steve questions as he fights off Chitauri soldiers with his shield.
"I'm seeing, still working on believing. Where's Banner? Has he shown up yet?" Tony replies, still flying through the streets.
"Banner?" Steve questions, surprised.
The four run and take cover behind upside down taxis as Loki and several Chitauri chariots rampage through the streets, setting off explosions, smashing cars and hurling people as they go off. People run from Loki and his entourage as Steve looks down the bridge.
"Those people need assistance down there" he comments as Chitauri soldiers approach the taxis and fire towards the four. Natasha and Katerina promptly pull out pistols and fire, Natasha turning to Steve and addressing him "We got this. It's good. Go!"
Steve turns to Clint and asks "You think you can hold them off?"
Katerina scoffs and Clint pulls a trigger on his quiver, automatically choosing an arrow "It would be my genuine pleasure"
Clint shoots an arrow at one of the soldier's heads, taking it down and gaining Steve a few seconds as he falls down the bridge and runs through the plaza below whilst Clint runs over to a bus full of people and helps them to escape whilst Katerina and Natasha provide covering fire.
"Just like Budapest all over again" Natasha exclaims, gaining a raised eyebrow from Katerina and an amused eyeroll from Clint, who promptly responds "You and I remember Budapest very differently"
As the three SHIELD agents continue fighting, Katerina switches to her staff as she runs out of bullets for her pistols, whilst Natasha somehow gains a Chitauri energy rifle, which she uses to fight off the swarming soldiers as Steve returns and joins the three, using his famous shield as a boomerang to take down the soldiers.
They are shocked (not literally) as a massive shockwave knocks back numerous Chitauri soldiers as Thor lands beside the four.
"What's the story upstairs?" Steve asks Thor, briefly turning towards him amidst the fighting.
"The power surrounding the cube is impenetrable" Thor replies as he uses his hammer, Mjollnir, to swing at the soldiers.
"Thor is right. We gotta deal with these guys" Tony's voice replies through everyone's comms.
"How do we do this?" Natasha asks as she swings the rifle, nearly hitting Katerina, who ducks and utters a brief complaint.
"As a team" Steve replies grimly.
"I have unfinished business with Loki" Thor says as the five continue to fight in a near circle.
"Yeah, get in line" Clint replies dryly as he fires arrow after arrow into the midst of the Chitauri swarms.
"Save it, Loki's gonna keep this fight focused on us and that's what we need. Without him, these things could run wild. We got Stark up top, he's gonna need us..." Steve says, pausing as Bruce pulls up on a beat-up motorcycle, climbing off and looking at the carnage around.
"So, this all seems horrible" he says mildly.
"I've seen worse" Natasha replies casually.
"Sorry" Bruce says apologetically as he looks at both female fighters.
Katerina shrugs as Natasha says "No. We could use a little worse"
"Stark? We got him" Steve says into his comms as the little exchange goes on.
"Banner?" Stark asks through comms and Katerina rolls her eyes irritably at the obviousness of the answer.
"Just like you said" Steve replies.
"Then tell him to suit up. I'm bringing the party to you" Tony says, finally getting to business. All the Avengers on the ground look up and see the tiny glint of Tony's red suit coming around a corner, quickly followed by a Leviathon.
"I... I don't see how that's a party" Natasha says hesitantly.
"Neither" Katerina replies grimly, crouching slightly as the metal wings of her suit unfold and Tony swoops down the street, followed still by the Leviathon. She gawks slightly as Bruce starts to approach the barreling monster.
"Dr. Banner. Now might be a really good time for you to get angry" Steve says, bracing with his shield.
Bruce turns to face the star-spangled man with a hint of a grin "That's my secret, Captain. I'm always angry"
Bruce's body shifts, turning into the massive green Hulk, his shirt shredding. Right as his transformation completes, the Leviathon reaches the green beast and is punched, its body doing a 360 in the air, at which point Tony fires a rocket into the Leviathon's soft underbelly, blowing up the giant creature, which tiny, burning shreds rain down from, which Steve shields himself and Natasha from with his shield and Katerina covers herself and Clint with her metal wings. As they momentarily rejoice, Katerina looks up and notices thousands more Chitauri flooding out from the vortex-like portal above Stark Tower.
"Guys..." she murmurs softly.
"Call it, Cap" Tony says, landing beside the others, forming a circle of the Earth's mightiest heroes.
"Alright, listen up. Until we can close that portal up there, we're gonna use containment. Barton, I want you on that roof, eyes on everything. Call out patterns and strays. Stark, you got the perimeter. Anything gets more than three blocks out, you turn it back or you turn it to ash" Steve calls out.
"Wanna give me a lift?" Clint asks, turning to Tony.
"Right. Better clench up, Legolas" he replies, making Katerina smirk with the nickname as Tony carries Clint up to the roof Steve pointed out before flying off.
"Thor, you've gotta try and bottleneck that portal. Slow them down. You've got the lightning. Light the bastards up" Steve says, turning towards Thor, who promptly flies off. Steve turns to the few remaining Avengers "You and me, we stay here on the ground, keep the fighting here. Katerina, get more of them here. And Hulk... smash"
