The bathroom was filled with a thick mist from the running shower. The light above flickered slightly, casting a faint, cold glow over the small, confined space. The chain between Light and L clinked softly as they both stood at opposite ends of the bathroom, the distance between them as taut as the metal links allowed. The air was thick with the steam rising from the hot shower, but the tension between Light and L was heavier, palpable.
Light, standing shirtless by the sink, adjusted the shower temperature, his movements calm and deliberate. He could feel L's gaze boring into him, the detective's dark eyes tracking every movement, analyzing everything down to the smallest detail. Light sighed softly, trying to ignore the uncomfortable feeling of being observed so intently, especially in such a vulnerable setting.
L stood just behind him, hunched slightly as always, his thin fingers fidgeting with the metal cuff around his wrist. His bare feet shifted awkwardly on the cold tile floor, and his wide eyes flicked from Light's back to the mist swirling around them. Despite his usual detached demeanor, there was something different in his gaze—a sharpness, a hyper-awareness that Light couldn't shake. His lips twitched, almost as if he were suppressing a smirk, though his expression remained passive.
"I don't see the problem, Light-kun," L said, his voice low and detached. "It's just a shower. We're both mature enough to handle this, aren't we?"
"Let's just get this over with. You stay on that side."
The detective's stare was unrelenting, his focus locked as if he were observing a suspect in an interrogation room. L shifted slightly, tugging the chain a bit to signal his movement as he stepped closer into the steam.
"You're very toned, Light-kun," L suddenly said, his voice soft but blunt, as though he were commenting on the weather. His eyes never left Light's body, studying it with unnerving intensity.
Light froze for a split second, caught off guard. He turned slightly, glancing over his shoulder at L, who was still staring at him with that unblinking gaze. "What?" Light's voice was calm, but there was a tension underneath, a tightness in his words.
"You have a... very balanced physique," L continued, his tone flat, analytical, as if he were complimenting a sculpture rather than another human being. "Your muscle definition is symmetrical. It's aesthetically pleasing."
For a moment, Light didn't know how to respond. L's bluntness always unnerved him, but this was... strange, even for him. Was he messing with him? Testing his reaction? It was always hard to tell with L, but the way he kept staring, so unselfconscious, made Light feel exposed in a way that had nothing to do with his lack of clothing.
L blinked, his face still unnervingly close to neutral. "It's just an observation," he replied, tilting his head slightly, fingers still toying with his lip in that characteristic manner. "You work out regularly, don't you?"
"I don't think that's relevant right now," Light muttered. "We're just trying to get clean."
L didn't seem to register Light's discomfort—or perhaps he did, and was purposely ignoring it.
Light ignored that, turning his back to L again, stepping into the stream of water. He let it wash over him, trying to focus on the warmth and the sound of the water rather than the unsettling presence behind him.
But he couldn't stop thinking. Why had L said that? Did it mean something? Was he trying to make him uncomfortable on purpose? Was it another way to dig deeper into his mind, to make him slip up? Light's thoughts churned, overanalyzing the simple statement, twisting it into something more than it probably was.
