A girl like you

What should I wear?

Ugh. I have nothing to wear.

Nothing at flippin’ all.

I think to myself whilst rummaging irritably through my tiny closet. I want to look pretty but not like I tried too much to look pretty – I want to seem effortlessly beautiful. Only this effortless beauty is taking way too much thought and well… effort to achieve. The fact that I don’t really know where my date is taking me doesn’t make the whole task easier.

I wish I’d just made him tell me where he’s taking me.

Then, upon remembering his “Sorry babe – it’s a surprise. I’m sure you’ll love it.”,  the sexy wink that came along with it and my tomato red blush that followed I realized there was no way I could have declined such an offer. Or rather – I couldn’t decline the person making the offer.

Since the original idea was just to grab a coffee downtown I thought I’d make that my guideline. Therefore, after an hour of desperate mother-daughter outfit consultations and much mockery from my Alex (my baby brother) I decided to go with a pair of cute denim shorts, a purple tank top and a pastel-pink cardigan – should match perfectly with any venue. I gave myself a full-body-check-up stare in the floor-length mirror on the back of my closet door. After receiving my self’s approval I padded along to the bathroom down the hallway to get on to the hair-and-make-up segment.

Now, I need to somehow manage to photoshop my face and make it look like I didn’t even bother to look in the mirror before leaving.

Yeah? Good luck with that.

My inner-self was not helping me to relax. Don’t get me wrong – my hands were shaking with excitement and not fear or nerves. But no matter the reason, it didn’t make applying mascara any easier. Nevertheless, after all but poking my eye out and nearly suffocating myself with the hairspray I was ready. For the first time I a while I felt genuinely pretty.

My eyes widened as I noticed the time on clock inside to bathroom – it said 4:02.

Well… maybe you got dressed a wee bit too early.

No kidding? What am I supposed to do with myself for the next two hours?

Sheesh. Not my fault you’re so flippin’ desperate!

I AM NOT DESPERATE! I’m just… enthusiastic.

Not having anything else to do I padded back into my room and began reading. Reading was probably my favorite thing to do, as nerdy as that sounds, and when I read time seemed to fly quickly. Even so I looked up in surprise as I heard the doorbell ring. I dashed out of my room and ran down the stairs like lightning. However, my inner-klutz could not miss out on any occasion to humiliate me so I ended up tripping on the stairs and landing with an undignified thump just as my mum reached the front door and open it. Brushing myself off quickly I rushed to her side.

“Good after-noon, you must be Alice’s mother?” Liam smiled irresistibly at my mum who kept her face composed but the way her eyes sparkled I could tell she has fangirling like a twelve-year-old inside. I know I was.

“Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Liam Payne. Thank you for allowing me to take your beautiful daughter out for the evening. I promise to return her safe and sound before eleven. Unless, of course you wish we return earlier.” He continued in this gentleman manner with which I was sure he’d gained mums’ complete and unconditional approval.

“S-sure. I mean it’s very nice of you to introduce yourself like this. You two have fun – stay safe.” Mum said in a somewhat embarrassed tone. She clearly didn’t expect him to be this perfect.

I examined Liam’s outfit as he ushered me toward his sleek, black Audi. He was looking handsome as ever yet casual at the same time in a pair of beige pants and a navy blue button-down with thin, white stripes. Reaching the car Liam opened the passenger door for me and gave me wink before saying as I got in:

“Wow. You are even more beautiful than I remembered you.  That shirt looks amazing on you and purple just so happens to be my favorite colour.

Yesss!! Point for me!

“Really? Thank you. Not looking too bad either – blue’s my favorite colour.” I smiled back as sweetly as I could.

“It must be destiny.” He grinned before closing by door and running eagerly around the car to get it.

“Ok, so now will you let me where we are going? Pretty please, with a cherry on top!” I asked as we got onto a road in the exact opposite direction of town. Liam chucked in his adorable manner before answering.

“Nope. All I’ll say is this – a girl like you deserves something better than a simple ‘coffee downtown’. But I can tell you anything else you’d like to know about me. If, in turn you’ll tell me about yourself. How’s that, gorgeous?” That sounded fair. Plus I was eager to learn what I could about the handsome boy driving the expensive-looking car.

“I’ll settle on the deal,” Liam smirked at my official tone. “So do you have any siblings? I have a younger brother and he’s a nightmare.”

“Yeah I have two older sisters – Ruth and Nicola. But Nicky’s married and she lives in Brighton so I don’t see her often. Ruth is actually ok, when she’s not blackmailing me of course.” He replied casually before asking:

“What do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies? Just what exactly makes you genuinely happy?” I must say that was a pretty unexpected question. But I knew the answer to it straight away.

“Writing.” I say, my eyes sparkling, “writing is my love. I know it sounds ridiculous but when i create all these scenarios in my head and then put them onto paper I feel like the happiest person alive. I can’t imagine becoming anything but a writer in the future. It’s my dream for my book to once be published – I’d become immortal.”

Liam looked over at me with keen interest and I knew he honestly cared about what I had just revealed to him. What a great feeling.

“Immortal? How so?” he questioned

“Well, not physically. But my thoughts would remain, and that’s what really matters.” I replied, smiling.

“From the moment I saw you I knew you looked different from the other girls. It’s great to have a passion like that Alice.

“What’s your passion then?”

“I guess you could say it’s boxing. It’s definitely something I’m good at. I’ve been training ever since middle-school. I started because well… pretty embarrassing to admit if front of a girl but – I was bullied in middle school.” Saying this he looked away from me and I noticed a hint of sadness in those magnificent hazel eyes.

“Oh. I’m sorry. But I’m very glad you were determined and defended yourself from your bullies. It takes a lot of guts to do that.” That reply brought a smile to Liam’s face.

The car stopped a moment later on the side of some ragged dirt-road leading into a mass of wild bushes. Liam turned to me, excitement beaming form his face, and said:

“We’re here darling. Sorry but we’ll have to walk a bit because the car won’t make it through the bushes.”

“Um, ok.”

Where in the world am I?

Sounds of flowing water reached me from somewhere nearby as Liam helped me out of the car. He didn’t let go of my hand (which appealed to me greatly) so we walked, hand-in-hand, down the little dirt-road.

“Oh my! Liam, wow. I don’t know what to say! It’s all so beautiful!”
