"His love, a silent, unspoken plot,
Her heart, a flame for someone else's lot."
The door opened, revealing Evelyn, staring back at Lucy with a staggered expression. The older one gave an awkward smile, clearly uncomfortable. Lucy had shown up in a not-so-nice way, barefoot and in her pjs.
"What...happened to you...?" She asked, seeing the stressed out look on Lucy's face.
"I-"
"Explain later, first get in!" Evelyn quickly wrapped her arm around the older girl, taking her in as she closed the door."Go to the bathroom to freshen up, quick!" She gestured. Since Lucy had been to Evelyn's house multiple times before, she already knew where things were, as she made her way upstairs to the bathroom. The girl fixed herself, running her hand through her hair to make it look at least presentable, and washed her feet.
Lucy came downstairs after she was finished, as Evelyn pat the seat beside her on the couch, gesturing for her to sit there.
"So now, explain." She said, as Lucy went silent for a second, hesitating. It was crazy.
"The...the power at my house was gone for like- a long time, and I saw this weird looking woman just standing outside." She spoke, as Evelyn listened, paying attention to what she said.
"Then I saw her entering my building, and the next second, she was at my doorstep." She admitted, recalling the traumatising event she had just experienced.
"That's..." Evelyn trailed off, clearly confused by what Lucy was saying. But she trusted her friend to explain further.
"Crazy." Lucy cut her off. "I know. I make no sense right now." She looked down.
"Actually..." Evelyn suddenly trailed off, making Lucy look at her in confusion. "The night we went to the Manor, I had a nightmare." She admitted. Lucy tilted her head, waiting for the girl to continue. "It wasn't a normal one. I...I got a cut on my hand from it. There was a ghost. It chased me in my nightmare, and all the injuries I got there stayed...when I woke up." Lucy's eyes widened at her revelation. No wonder why Evelyn missed school the next day.
"Why didn't you tell us earlier?" She said, her voice laced with concern. "We could've helped you!"
"I guess it was foolish of me to not tell a soul about that, but..."
"But nothing, I'll always be there for you." Lucy assured, spotting the bandaid on her hand. "Is...that the cut?" She asked as Evelyn nodded.
"It may sound crazy, what I'm about to say..."
...
"Wren- wait!" River called out, grabbing a hold of Wren's wrist as he prevented her from moving. Wren's failed attempt at escaping made her embarrassed.
"River...let me go." She said, not even finding courage to make eye contact with her. They both messed up, and guilt was eating them both alive.
"Please, we need to talk it out." He spoke with vulnerability.
"Talk what out? River, what should we talk about? Huh? I've already given my answer, now please...just forget about me." She spoke with a hint of embarrassment and guilt. It hurt her how River was suffering, and it was because of her.
From the corner of his eyes, he could spot a familiar sight on the mirror, as it neared both of them. Wren raised an eyebrow at River's sudden stiffness, seeing his eyes widen.
Without an answer, River quickly enveloped Wren in a protective embrace, taking her away from the danger he just saw.
"What the hell, Riv?" Wren asked, both of them hitting the wall of her bedroom as River let go of her. He shook his head, blinking.
"Oh no, no no no!" He repeated, as Wren shot him confused glances, holding him firmly by the shoulders.
"It's here." He said.
"What? What's here? It's just you and me! What's wrong, Riv?" She spat in confusion and annoyance.
River suddenly stumbled and fell to the ground, Clutching his stomach in pain as he curled into a ball on the ground. Wren only watched with a ridiculed expression on her face by his actions. River kept muttering inaudible words, but she could understand he was begging for something to stop.
"Wren, look in the mirror!" He managed to let out as he kept clutching his stomach. Wren's eyes darted to the mirror.
There was nothing.
"What is this, Riv? Some kind of joke? What are you doing?" She asked, her voice raised at him. She was getting pissed off by now, a guy pretending some invisible being was tormenting him. It definitely pissed her off, even more so because of their 'history' together.
"Wren...Agh! Something's wrong, it's been bothering me a lot!"
"Obviously, ever got psychiatric help?" She said, extending her hand to him. By now, the poor boy had calmed down a bit, still clutching his stomach. He had been repeatedly kicked in the stomach until now, and it hurt real bad.
"No, you saw what just happened! Something's doing this to me!" Wren wanted to laugh out loud at River's ridiculous behaviour. It was a sign he was slowly going crazy, according to Wren.
"Yeah, I'm sure a therapist would help." She said, as Wren got up with her help. "Get a hold of yourself! Look at you! You're pathetic."
Her words may have hit Wren a little harsher than expected, but he realised that is what he looked like right now. A fool. A pathetic loser. He lowered his head, guilt immediately striking Wren. But she didn't want to admit it. To her, it was for his own good.
"I may look pathetic right now, but I can assure you, I'm not crazy. Something is after me, and it happened a few days after we went to Moonbreak Manor." He said, his tone serious. He looked at her straight in the eye.
"So now you believe in that shit?"
"Forget it, coming here was a mistake on my part. I'm sorry." He said. He gave up, she didn't believe him, this just caused more problems between them. It did everything except strengthening their bond. Instead of making amends, they ended up in a worse position.
"I'll leave now. Goodbye."
With that, he left without another word.
