CHAPTER 9

“GOOD HEAVENS, Prince Daniel, I am quite surprised to find you here,” I said, addressing the young prince who's now in front of me. “I had assumed you were occupied with your father's affairs.”

“Indeed, Your Grace, I must confess I felt a similar pang of surprise,” a charming smile gracing his lips. “Being suddenly taken away from England was unexpected, especially with everything I had to do. How are you? It seems an age since we last met, a mere fortnight, if I recall correctly.”

I gave him a radiant smile and motioned for him to take a seat opposite me. “To be perfectly candid, I'm a little shaken. There have been some problems in my country lately, but I'm okay.”

Once he settled into the seat across from me, I fixed my gaze on him and instructed someone to bring refreshments for both the Prince and myself. His visit was lucky; I needed to ask him a favor. I have a matter to attend to in the Philippines in the coming days—or perhaps even today, depending on whether I receive news regarding a problem with the organization. I would like to entrust him with the task of staying here at the palace, for at least I will have someone I can trust while I am away in Scotland.

Primo told me they're in trouble and need my help. I'm the Empress of this group, and I can't just ignore them. Siguro naman walang problema kung si Daniel ang bibigyan ko ng bas-bas na magbantay dito sa palasyo. I shall only be there for a single night, and then after that, I'll be coming home.

I simply cannot allow Daniel to remain in my palace, knowing that his father, the notorious imposter, is still at large. His presence here would be unwise, because I know, that ruthless man might be tempted to stir up trouble. While I do not fear him, my resources are already stretched thin, and I cannot afford to be drawn into another conflict at this time. Adding his rudeness to my current burdens would simply be too much to bear.

“My Lord,” I began, “I have a small request. I hope you will not find it burdensome.”

He leaned back in his chair, intrigued. “What is it?”

“Things have been tough for me here, and I need your help. If Damein were present, I would certainly seek his counsel, but as you are the one available, I hope you will consider my request,” his face turned serious as I continued. “I have urgent business overseas that I can't talk about; it's top secret. I understand this is a significant favor to ask, but I am truly desperate. Could you possibly take charge of the palace while I am away? Just for a single day. I have no other recourse but to turn to you and your brother. Please, grant me this favor.”

“That's fine with me,” he replied. “As long as you're safe on your trip, I don't mind. It's only for a day, and I'm sure the King won't even notice I'm gone.”

“God,” I sighed in relief. “I was worried I wouldn't find anyone reliable and trustworthy to watch over the palace while I'm gone. Thank you so much. I promise I'll be back as soon as possible.”

He smiled at me which I returned in kind. Between Damien and Daniel, I find myself inclined to place my trust in the second prince of England. Daniel's leadership is strong and reliable, while Damien, though capable, is sometimes too casual for my liking, especially when dealing with important matters.

I trust Damien, and I'm honestly proud of him. Hindi ko naman sinasabi 'to just because his brother is good, but I really think he's doing a great job. Ayoko lang talaga ang pagkaisip bata niya. Kapag kasi kaming dalawa ang magkasama hindi niya ako seneseryoso. And I really, really hate that about him. When it comes to ruling the country, I know Damein would make a great king. And I can't wait to see him on the throne someday, finally kicking that impostor out of his palace. It was a good thing I didn't tell him about that big problem though. Ayokong masangkot pa sa problema nila.
