I once knew a boy (lad) that when he became a man would change the meaning of rock n' roll forever. He would also change the lives of everyone he met. I was born on December 23, 1960, in Dublin Ireland as Elizabeth Carrith O'Mallery. With Reddish blond hair a bit curly. He was born August 1, 1959, in Sheffield, Yorkshire England.
My parents moved to Sheffield in 1974. I was 13 and a half. I was supposed to start school. I met a girl named Ryan that helped me around and we became close friends. I couldn't really stay in school because I was deaf and my parents couldn't afford the hearing aids that I needed to hear. So they could only afford sign classes for me.
The doctors said I'd have to wear them to be able to hear anything. But I could read lips and feel a little vibrations. Only one problem the British spoke faster than the Irish. I had orientation for
the school I was to try to go to but instead we decided to have home classes. I went to orientation anyway and that was when I first laid eyes on him.
We had just finished the orientation and I was on my way out of the gym. Before I could reach for the door it smacked me right in the face and I fell on my butt. "Oh, Cricky. You alright?" He said
but I didn't hear him.
Until I seen this hand reach down in front of me. I took it and he helped me. He was tall, dark, curly hair, typical look for the teens back then. "You should be more careful when opening door you bloke." I said with one hand on my face.
"Dat was rude. I apologized to you." He said as I seen his lips move. My friend Ryan grabbed me and dragged me out of the gym. I couldn't take my eyes off him. He had a half grin on his face and he waved as I went out the door.
"Dat's Joseph you want to stay clear from him. He's a hooligan." She said making me look at her. As usual I didn't listen to her or anyone. She also took sign with me. He was good looking even if he did have slight mole/blemish on his check. He had it removed years later.
At the time I didn't really pay attention to anyone. I had a hard time trying to stay in school. My parents as I said decided to have me home bound. That was when I met a lad named Rick Savage nicknamed Sav. I was sitting on the porch and he was walking by. I was wearing a sun dress enjoying what little summer we had left. It was the type the girls wore in the 70's.
I wasn't the dating age yet. My parents were strict. I was skinny and just started to develop. When he walked by he stopped and backed up. He came over and sat down. "You must be new here. Where do you go to school? I'm Rick but everyone calls me Sav." I just smiled at him reading his lips.
My mom opened the door and said, "Elizabeth you know you're not supposed to talk to strangers. You better get in here before your da sees ya. Beth look at me." I didn't hear her. Rick noticed I was just sitting there staring at him. He pointed behind me and I turned around. "Get inside now." She said. I sighed and got up. He smiled and waved at me. I stood in front of her to see what she would say to him. "Don't bother speaking to her. She won't hear you. Sorry honey. Go in and you go home."
I went in. He kind of looked like a girl so I laughed once I got in. He had long, curly, light brown hair and was about the same height as me. My parents didn't want me to miss anything, so they were trying new ways to fix my problem. My friend Ryan always brought home the class assignments.
When I would finish, she'd take them back. Every time I seen her, she'd tell me what the kids where saying. I was learning how to just cope with never being able to hear a word. My da finally saved up enough money to afford hearing aids for me.
So the day I turned sixteen he gave them to me as a gift. At first they were big but my hair would cover them. So after the holidays and the New Year I finally was able to actually attend school. But it would be to finish out my senior year.
