Awkwardly carrying a six-pack of blue sports drinks - because, really, blue was the only acceptable flavor - you wandered down the hall to Keigo's apartment.

This was your peace offering. Even if he wasn't a client anymore, he could still be a friend. Right? You hadn't heard from him in days, so your plan was to leave the drinks on his doorstep and then go. If he felt like calling you after that, great. If not, you'd at least have tried.

So after you put the drinks on the little mat in front of his door, why were you still standing in the hallway, staring at his door?

Cursing yourself for being so stupid, you were about to leave when you heard muffled sounds coming from inside his apartment. Leaning closer to the door, you listened in. It was Keigo. Definitely Keigo. From the tone of his voice, it sounded like he was talking to someone, but in a weird cutesy voice.

"I love you, you know."

What?

Who was he talking to? Maybe he was on the phone. Maybe it was his mom. Or sister. Did he have a sister?

Or a mom?

You didn't know.

"You are the cutest thing I have ever seen. I just want to squeeze you and kiss you and-- ."

Okay, ew. That wasn't the kind of thing you said to a mom or sister. Yeah, it had been a few days since you talked, but was he already seeing someone else? Not that you were ever actually seeing each other to begin with. It had all been a transaction, you reminded yourself.

Although he had never actually paid anything.

And you hadn't sent an invoice.

Either way, suddenly you felt like you didn't want to hear anymore. You backed up from Keigo's door, heart heavy as you turned to leave.

Until the door creaked open.

"Y/n?"

Son of a bitch.

You took a deep breath.

"Hey!" You heard him say behind you. "What... what are you doing here? And where are you going?"

You stopped walking and reluctantly turned around. Was this it? Was this the moment you confronted the fact that he was dating someone, for real dating someone, not someone he was paying, but someone he actually liked and spoke in that weird baby voice to. She was probably beautiful and cute and smart, since he definitely needed someone in the relationship to have some brains, and had a normal job and wasn't an escort and –

Furry?

There was Keigo, sanding there in his doorway, holding something small and orange in his hands.

"This is my new kitten. Isn't she the cutest thing you've ever seen?" He stared down lovingly at the fuzzy furball. "Aren't you the cutest?" he said in that baby talk voice again, smushing the little cat's face.

A kitten. He'd been talking to a kitten.

"I rescued her on a mission."

You couldn't help but smile and relax your shoulders a bit as you walked back to his door. Once in front of him, you gently petted the little thing's head.

"You know, cats eat birds."

He covered the kitten's ears. "Shush your mouth. How dare you say that in front of Miss Pretty Paws."

"I'm sor--." Hold on. Maybe you had misheard. "Miss...what?"

"Just look at her adorable little paws!" he beamed, holding up a little kitten paw for you to see. It was, in fact, adorable. As was the goofy, smiling look on his face. His smile was soft, a little sheepish, and it did things to your heart you wished it wouldn't.
