"I'll attack you, show me how to defend yourself" Bluemoon instructed. Silverpaw dipped her head, not bothering to reply as she was busy preparing herself. Bluemoon leaped, knocking Silverpaw off her paws. She scrambled up, bracing herself for her mentors next attack. As Bluemoon leapt, she flung herself under her mentors paws, swiping as she went. "Better, but not good enough" Bluemoon meowed, turning around. Just then, white flakes began falling out of the sky. "What's happening?" Alarm flared through her. She dove into the shelter of a gorse Bush. Bluemoon let out a small mrrow of laughter. "That's just snow" Bluemoon told her. Creeping out of the gorse Bush, a large flake landed on Silverpaw's muzzle. "Let's continue" Bluemoon instructed. "Ok" Silverpaw replied, straightening up and shaking the snow flake off. As Bluemoon leaped, Silverpaw tried to dodge to the side but slipped on the cold snow. Amusement flickered in her mentors eyes. "Can we head back to camp, my paws fell like they're about to fall off?" Silverpaw asked through chattering teeth. "Sure" Bluemoon replied. Silverpaw followed her mentor back to camp. "Silverpaw" Otterstar summoned her. "I'm pleased to inform you that your hunting assessment is tomorrow at sunhigh."
"Yes!" Excitment mingled with nervousness coursed through her. Otterstar dismissed her so she bounded over to were her littermates were crowded. Excitement flooded off them in waves. "My assessment is at moonhigh!" Ferretpaw boasted. "Mines at sundown" Sparrowpaw told his siblings. "Well mines at sunup" Adderpaw meowed, bouncing like a kit. "Mines at Sunhigh" Silverpaw declared, padding up to them. "I hope I do well."
"Of course you will do well!" Ferretpaw exclaimed, rubbing her nose against Silverpaw's. "I'm going to get some rest" her sister announced, getting up and heading to the apprentices den "That's a good idea" Silverpaw meowed, padding after her. She and Ferretpaw curled up next to each other and fell into a deep sleep.Silverpaw blinked open her open her eyes to see thick undergrowth surrounding her. Shining through the trees, the sun warmed silver pelt. The scent of prey made her belly rumble loud enough for another cat to hear. Tall trees loomed around her. A flash of ginger told Silverpaw that she wasn't alone. This must be Blazepaw's dream! She realised. Creeping after the flash of ginger, she almost crashed into Blazepaw who was crouched, stalking a mouse. Quickly, she darted away just as Blazepaw looked up from her mouse. "Who's there?" Blazepaw asked. Silverpaw poked her head out from behind the tree. "It's just me, Silverpaw."
"Silverpaw! How are you?" Blazepaw asked bouncing over. "I'm fine but I'm sorry for disturbing your hunt" Silverpaw told her. "It's ok!" Blazepaw replied. "I'll leave you to it then" Silverpaw meowed. "See you at the gathering."
"Bye!" Blazepaw called after her.Silverpaw woke to the sound of rustling as her sister crawled out of her nest. "How was your assessment?" She asked Ferretpaw. "Good, but I didn't get much sleep after" Ferretpaw replied before padding out of the den. She got up, shaking the scraps of moss out of her pelt. Slowly, she padded out of the den. Snow lay thickly all around the camp. Winterfrost emerged from the nursery and sat down. Adderpaw and Sparrowpaw were swatting a ball of moss to each other. Honeyleaf rushed into the medicine den, a load of catmint in his mouth. Shrewflight was gathering cats for patrols. "Adderpaw!" Dapplefeather called. Silverpaw turned her head to see her brothers mentor padding over to him. "Time for your assessment."
She watched as Adderpaw left the camp. "This will be me soon" She mumbled to herself. Above her, clouds danced across the pale blue sky. "Silverpaw, will you bring Winterfrost some fresh-kill please?" Moonstripe asked, slowly padding up to her. He's never been this polite, she thought. "Sure" She replied, padding over to the fresh-kill pile. Shoving the soggy prey aside, she picked out the most plump, dry and tasty looking rabbit for her friend. She dragged the rabbit, which was almost as big as her, over to the nursery. "I brought you this" She mumbled around the rabbit. "Thank you" Winterfrost meowed. She dropped her rabbit and padded over to the camp entrance. As she looked across the moor, she spotted Adderpaw speaking after the fattest rabbit she'd ever seen. "Wow" she muttered to herself. "Silverpaw!" Bluemoon called. "Get ready for your assessment!"
"Ok!" She called back. "Hey" Thistlebush meowed, padding up to her. "Hi" She meowed back nervously. "Hey, what's wrong?" Worry clouded his eyes. "Nothing, I'm just nervous for my assessment" Silverpaw replied. "No need to worry, you'll do just fine" Thistlebush told her. "Thanks" Silverpaw meowed, smiling shyly. "Assessment time!" Bluemoon called. "Good luck!" Thistlebush meowed. "I don't need it" Silverpaw told him. Hopefully, she added silently.
