Through Fire

Dad had an early shift again which caused me to almost mis my bus again. Kate was waiting for me at our lockers. “You look like you just got out of bed.” “Thanks nice to see you too.” I shot back. “Ready for our excruciating 2 hour long math period?” “ready as I’ll ever be.” I said and we made our way towards the class.

When second period was almost over the ground violently began to shake. “What is happening?” Kate yelled due to the shaking and crashing of things being very loud. “probably an earth quack, get under your desk.” We both did, well almost everyone did. “Stay calm everybody. Don’t panic and stay under your desks.” Mr. Franklin said.

The ground shook for quite a while. The beamer and the board came down. All the plants shattered over the floor. “I’m scared.” Kate said while grabbing my hand. “We will be fine.” I said trying to reassure her. “When the ground stops shaking we are going to evacuate as quickly as possible in case there is an after shock.” Mr. Franklin said from under his desk.

“After shock.” Kate said on the verge of tears. “Just keep breathing okay? Nothing will happen. We’ll be out of here before you know it.” She just nodded closing her eyes. When the ground finally stopped shaking Mr. Franklin stood up. “I need you all to follow me.” We all did as he said and followed him outside.

Kate was glued to my side, scared to death. “see told you.” I said giving her a little squeeze. “Listen up everybody. As you can see there is no way we will be able to continue the lessons. We have notified your parents, who will be here as soon as they can to pick you all up.” Some people where cheering, some crying and some gasping.

“great I’m going to be here for a while then.” “Is your dad working?” “Yeah so I have to wait here for a while. I just hope Chris is okay. There is no service.” “He is probably fine. My parents are going to be a while too so we can wait together.” We played a few games together, we read a book which I had taken to school and we watched two movies I had downloaded before,   Ms. Thompson came to say that Kate's parents where here. “Text me when you’re home okay?” She said while giving me a hug. “Yeah you too.”

I was the only kid left sitting on the side walk together with our principle Miss. Livera. "I need to pee.'' ''I'm sorry honey, but the building is on the verge of collapsing. I can't let you in.'' I just nodded looking  back at the building who was indeed on the verge of collapsing. The two side buildings were completely fine tho.

I watched two more movies when I finally saw my dad jump out of a car I didn’t recognize. “Sofia.” Dad yelled as he ran towards me. “Dad.” I said jumping in his embrace. “Where is Chris?” “Already in the car. Are you okay?” “I’m fine.” He looked up at the building and hugged me a little tighter. ''Dad I need to pee.'' He laughed at me “Okay lets go.” “yes please.”

I got in the back of the black jeep next to Chris. Behind the wheel there was a man I didn’t know. “Hi I’m Buck I work with your dad at the station.” “Hi I’m Sofia.” I said and Buck took of towards our house. Dad invited buck to stay over for dinner. I immediately texted Kate when I got home, saying that I was save.

We had sushi Chris and mines favorite food. We all talked about our crazy day. Chris was the only one who had no collapsing building. We talked for quit a while when it was eventually time to put Chris back to bed. ''Can you put me to bed again?'' Chris asked with a big smile.

''Sure. Go put on your pajama and brush your teeth and then I'll come, okay?'' ''Okay.'' He got up on his crutches and walked toward the bedroom. ''So the principle told me there will be no school for both of you until they fixed the damage that was caused and the building is cleared safe again.'' Dad said while he and buck cleaned the table.

''Yeah she said that to me too.'' I said. ''So you will go to your abuela tomorrow.'' ''Dad I'm old enough to stay home alone.'' ''Yes but not when this is happening so I would very much like for you and your brother to stick together.'' ''Fine.'' I sighted making my way towards Chris's bedroom, seeing he was already waiting in his bed.

''Do you want me to sing you a song?'' ''Yes please.'' I sang you are my sunshine again and tucked him in. Dad was already in the door way smiling at me. ''Stop.'' He held up his hands in surrender. I walked back to the living room where Buck was sitting on the couch.

I grabbed a glass of water from the kitchen and then decided I was going to bed after the long day I had. ''I'm going to bed.'' ''Goodnight Mija.'' Dad said giving me a kiss on the forehead and a hug. ''Goodnight dad. Night Buck.'' ''Night.'' He said giving me a little wave.

The living room light stayed on for a few more hours when I eventually heard Buck leave and dad go to bed. I finally fell asleep.
