march 1st, first day of camp.
paintbrush was practically thrown forwards when the bus they were riding suddenly hit a stop. they heard the old doors squeak open, which caused many kids to run out, leaving paintbrush to squeeze past everyone; which is VERY hard to do in a bus isle.
they stepped down the steps and shielded their eyes from the blaring sun. the scene before them was.. interesting to say the least. a stand that looked somewhat like a front desk was the first thing that popped out. they trudged to the stand and scanned the area, which was littered with papers and small card looking IDs.
a short woman with dark purple hair met their gaze. "name and last name?" she asked, paintbrush was almost surprised at how relaxing her voice was. "uh, paintbrush, paintbrush canettes." they replied. the woman seemed confused, and raised an eyebrow, "how's that spelt, dear?" paintbrush sighed and rolled their eyes, "c-a-n-e-t-t-e-s." most people never knew how to spell their last name, that's why they hated it.
"alright.. here's your camper ID, all of the information you need will be on there, and you may go get your luggage from the tailor over there!" she announced proudly.
paintbrush looked at the ID, their photo was some crappy picture their parents had submitted. it had basic information plastered across it, their age, their name, cabin number, and cabin room?? jeez— this place was fancy. but despite all the information cluttering the ID, one thing stood out to them the most. sex. yeah, paintbrush was biologically male, but it still hurt to be reminded of it everywhere they went. they really wished IDs just had gender or something, not stupid 'sex.' it's not like they would have their gender changed on anything anyways, though. they had only told their online friends they were non-binary, and their parents.
but that didn't really go as planned.
they sighed and stuffed the ID back in their pocket, and hurried over to the luggage tailor. they searched through the bags until they found their backpack and suitcase, both packed to the brim with stuff.
as paintbrush rolled their suitcase through the crowd of people, they could already tell they hated it here. their ankles were itchy from the grass, bugs swarmed around in every place, and worst of all, they had to spend six months here. getting to miss school for three months was great and all, but they'd rather not spend their summer at a crappy behavior camp.
paintbrush's mind wandered as they looked at their ID again, cabin five, room nine, they repeated in their head. they had to admit, this camp was pretty big; and seemed decently wealthy to afford such big cabins— if you could even call them that though. they looked more like small motels. they reached cabin five and walked through the door, making sure to wipe their feet off on the mat in front of it.
their eyes scanned the hall as they searched for their room, counting down the doors in their head. they eventually got to nine, it was almost at the end of the hall. they opened the door, which followed with a small squeak. they stepped inside and kicked off their shoes. two beds were in the room, a long nightstand in between the both of them. the whole place seemed dusty, and smelled of plywood. they sat down on a bed, which was surprising hard and seemed very uncomfortable.
"HEY!" a sudden voice called out. paintbrush's body jumped and turned to where the yell came from. out from a closet, a person with blonde, gold locks stepped out, a finger pointed towards paintbrush; "that's my bed, mister! or uh.. i think mister!"
paintbrush's eyes rolled at the comment made by the stranger. "okay first off, who are you, and second, WHY DID YOU COME FROM THE CLOSET?" the girl dusted herself off, and strode towards paintbrush. "i'm lightbulb, and i was playing hide and seek!" she smiled. "...uh huh.. with who exactly?" "...myself."
