The corridor was dark and empty, giving it an eerie feeling. Siya shivered involuntarily as she went about her late night rounds 'round the hospital.

It's been five hours since her shift started, and she had covered most of the work assigned to her.

Tired, she sat down on a bench on the second floor by the window, gazing out of it.

She turned her phone on, checking the time. She still had five minutes left of her break. Sighing, she untied her hair, which was wet from her sweat and sticking to the back of her neck.

She leaned against the wall, closing her eyes. How she missed sleep!
And the quietness and dim lights of the corridor were making it harder for her to stay awake.

Suddenly, she heard the unmistakable sound of someone breathing near her. Her eyes popped open, all signs of sleep gone. She squinted her eyes in the dimly lit corridor, but all she saw was the impending darkness. This part of the hospital where she was standing required some serious renovation.

She turned on her flashlight but saw no one. Assuming that it was just her mind playing tricks with her, she exhaled a sigh of relief, her heart still beating loudly in her chest.

Just as she was about to turn around she heard it again- louder and even clearer this time. Her heart beating like a drum between her ribs, she turned on her flashlight yet again, looking around her more seriously and frantically this time.

"Who is there?" Siya yelled, desperation and panic etched into her voice. She received no reply.

"Who is there?" Siya tried again, louder this time. "Whoever you are, go away! Or else I will have to inform the authorities!"

Her threat and panic fell on deaf ears as all she got in response was that chilling sound of someone breathing, and-footsteps.

Her eyes widened and her phone almost slipped out of her fingers as the sound of footsteps grew clearer and it was obvious that whoever they belonged to, was walking towards her, slowly and strategically, like a predator towards it's prey.

Gripping her phone tightly in her hand, Siya broke into a run. Her heart pounded rapidly in her chest as she ran, the person following her.

Whoever it was, had long legs, because they gradually came nearer to her.

"Help!" Siya shouted, her voice ringing through the empty hospital corridors, the dull and broken windows the only witness to her misfortune.

Just as she rounded a corner, a hand snaked around her arm and pulled her against the wall with great force. She gasped and tumbled onto the table standing near the wall, her hair covering her face, her breath coming out in quick, panicked gasps.

From her position, all she could see was the feet of her offender. Gulping, she straightened up and looked through the curtain of her long, dark hair which covered her face at the man towering over her.

Her breath hitched.

It was one of her older patients. He had been in the hospital for a month now since he had been diagnosed with an incurable, terminal disease. So, for better treatment and regular monitoring, he had admitted himself in here-since he had no family.

"You..." panted Siya, her mind a flood of questions and her heart running a marathon a second.

The man gave a twisted grin, tilting his head and surveying her in a sick way. Suddenly, he grabbed both of her shoulders, and brought his face nearer to her. Siya tried to free herself of his grasp, but he was surprisingly strong for a man who looked so fragile and was ill.

"I've waited a long time for this moment" came his raspy voice. Siya could detect the unmistakable scent of alcohol from his breath, which he must have sneaked in, since consuming alcohol in his condition was like inviting death to your house.

She tried to push him away.

"I've watched you and waited a long time...to touch you" he said, grinning like a maniac. Siya's heart was beating painfully.

"Listen mister, get the hell away from me or else I'll make you regret ever admitting into our hospital" Siya warned him, sounding a lot braver than she actually felt.

The man's face blanched.

"This is the problem with women" he sneered. "First they do stuff to get our attention and then act all high and mighty when they get it".

Siya's eyes widened in disbelief. Her fear giving way to anger, she asked, "And when, do tell, have I ever begged or tried to get your nasty attention?"

His grip on her arms tightened and he leaned closer, making her lean away, with a disgusted expression on her face.

"Have you not, when you came and checked on me all those times?"

"That's my job-"

"Have you not wanted my attention and affection when you asked me so softly to take my medicines when I wasn't in the mood. I only took them because you insisted".

Siya couldn't believe her ears. This guy was out of his mind.

"That's my job you're not special or anything -"

"SAY THAT AGAIN" he shouted, making her flinch, spit flying out of his mouth. "SAY THAT I MEAN NOTHING TO YOU...and I'll kill you" his eyes burned, and he seemed to mean his words.

"GET AWAY FROM ME YOU SICK BASTARD" Siya screamed at the top of her lungs, punching his face.

His face turned an angry shade of purple from the impact and he bared his teeth like an animal. He grabbed her hair and forced her face towards him, leaning in.

"I'll ruin you! You tricked me! If you don't want to be mine, you can't be anyone else's".

Siya's eyes widened as she realised what he meant. Her world shattered as the impact of those words registered on her. No no no...NO NO NO.

"LEAVE MEEE!"

BANG!

The sound of gunfire filled the still air, the smoke making it hard to breath. Siya screamed and covered her ears and her eyes, face turned away from the man. She looked down at the ground, her legs shaking like crazy as she saw the man, who was standing before her, threatening her just moments before, now lying dead at her feet. Her breaths came out in panicked gasps as she stared at the man's blank face, his eyes empty and unseeing, his mouth open in a silent scream. And that unavoidable sight of thick, dark red blood oozing out of a small hole in his forehead.

Being a surgeon Siya had seen blood countless of times, but never had she felt as nauseous as she felt in that instance, standing in that dark corridor with a dead man at her feet and another man in front of her.

Hyperventilating, she looked up-only to be met by a pair of cold hazel eyes, which were already looking at her from the moment the sick man had succumbed to his death, a dark, yet alluring twinkle in his eyes.

The main question that was running in her mind as she locked eyes with this enigmatic man who had saved her life bit might as well pose just as much of a threat to her was: WHO WAS HE?
