CHAPTER FOUR. The Night Of The Comet

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY! HAVE A CUPCAKE!"

Hazel blinked at her friend, Carla, who smiled happily as she held up a small box from the local bakery. They were in the Mystic Falls Library, where Hazel's dad worked and Hazel helped with random tasks and got a small allowance. It was September 10th, the night of the comet, and Hazel's birthday. School had already finished, and Hazel had already gotten wished happy birthday from all of her friends, but Carla had seemingly thought to bring an extra gift.

Hazel smiled softly, taking it from her hands. "Thank you." She said softly. She placed it on the desk, where one of the main computers was, as well as the library scanner, office supplies, and a photo of Hazel and her dad, which he kept there at all times. "You going to the comet festival? We have flyers," Hazel picked a piece of paper off the top of a stack, handing it in her friends direction.

"Obviously!" Carla chirped. "But first I have to go see Emily and Max, we're using Em's dad's camping equipment. I'll see you there?" Hazel nodded, watching her friend walk out as two girls walked in. Elena Gilbert and Bonnie Bennett. Hazel hadn't talked to Elena since last night, and Stefan hadn't even been at school that day at all.

Elena smiled as she walked up, recognizing Hazel by her hair instantly. "Mrs. Lockwood said to pick up flyers to hand out here." She explained, but Hazel was already picking up a large stack of papers, putting them up on the taller shelf of the desk where customers and other library users stand.

"All printed out. Almost ran out of ink." Hazel teased as she smiled. "I have a few laminated ones too, to put at counters at the shops." Hazel looked around, mumbling and whispering as she struggled to remember where exactly they went. "They're somewhere here."

Elena and Bonnie smiled at each other, before back at her. They had walked through town once already with a small stack they got from Carol, but already needed more. They'd also just finished their conversation about the MIA Salvatore. Elena put her elbows up on the table, playing with her fingers anxiously. "Have you talked to Stefan at all?"

Hazel was standing between the door that went from the front desk to the back of the library, where there were old files, newspapers, old books, archives, and anything else her dad kept around that he wanted or the town required. She clicked her tongue, shaking her head. "No, but I don't even have his number. And I was not going back to his house after that creepy hot brother." Bonnie looked at Elena with a questioning look, who only shook her head in response. Hazel gasped as she finally found the laminated stack, walking back towards the front desk. "He hasn't texted?"
