Sometime having a heart condition meant that you couldn't be an Olympic champion, other times, when the Olympics didn't touch you at all, it only meant you could sit during PE class and read a book while your classmates sweat and got mad at each other.
«It's already your third book in two weeks, Red. » she heard Melissa commenting from the volleyball camp. «Don't get too smart on me. »
The redhead rose her face and looked at the girl who was becoming her closest friend with an ironic smirk. «Shouldn't you have a game to win? »
Melissa showed her tongue out before focusing back on the game she was playing. Her friend was actually one of the best volleyball players of the school, the opposite of what she could say about Bella, who now was trying to avoid the ball like a plague.
«What are you reading? » a deep voice asked, coming from her left.
Sabrina tried hard not to smile, but in the ended failed. Her eyes met Jasper's and saw him smiling too while he approached her. «Lord of the Rings. I'm in the middle of the Two Towers. »
He sat down beside her, leaving her uncredulous by that voluntary closeness. Jasper had never dared to be close to her unless it was strictly necessary. «First time? »
He was wearing a dark blue long-sleeved shirt, with matching pants. The redhead took a moment to admire his spontaneous smile, wondering what the cause of that was.
«Third, actually. » she smiled shyly, looking down at the book. «I've had re read The Hobbits last week. »
«Read the Silmarillion? » he asked raising an eyebrow, as if he was interrogating her.
«This question insults me. » she remarked cooly. «I didn't take you for a nerd, Jasper Hale. »
He shrugged, his smile never leaving his face. «This sentence insults me. » he copied her smirking. «I appreciate good literatures, whatever genre they are. »
«Mhh, It? » she asked curiously, wanting to find out how many books they both have read.
«I prefer The Green Mile, but It is a solid second. » she noticed that he had dimples, and for some reason that thing made her smiling sweetly. Jasper Hale, the most unapproachable person of the school, had dimples. «I wanted to apologize for my brother's behaviour yesterday. He and Bella must have had an argument or something. »
It was her turn to raise an eyebrow at him. «You all need to get better at flirting with girls, or you'll make them run away. » she commented teasingly.
«Yeah, I'll make sure to tell him that. » he said amused looking back at his brother who was playing against Mike Newton. «So, what is your favourite genre to read? »
Was he doing small talk? Sabrina needed a moment to get used of the fact that now she and Jasper were friendly with each other. Not strangers; not launching darts with their eyes; but friendly.
Friendly meant that you still had to know the other; it meant that you would ask question in order to get to know each other better. And if that was their case, it meant she had free access to ask question of her own.
«Depends...» she said pretending to be thinking, bringing her right hand under her chin. «Depends, on how many colours your eyes change. »
She saw him tensing for a moment, still not looking at her. «I thought you wouldn't ask questions. »
«Yes, but I don't think it's fair for you to ask whatever you want while I have to theorize. » she shrugged, and when she saw him staying silent she couldn't help the disappointment to grow. «But if you rather not, I'll keep reading. » She focused back on her one true love, Legolas.
