Author POV
The weekend sun was high and bright, a brilliant disk in the clear sky, reflecting sharply off the expansive glass doors of the mall entrance. The automatic doors slid open and closed with a soft pneumatic hiss as a bustling crowd flowed past, a sea of motion and sound. Among them—five identical silhouettes stood out, their unique personalities the only distinguishing factors in a vivid painting in motion. The Nakano Quintuplets took their first step toward the sliding doors…
But halted abruptly.
Because right beside them, their path converging perfectly, two familiar male figures were also about to walk in. A strange, serendipitous twist of fate.
“Ah!” Yotsuba was the first to react, her head bobbing up and down, eyes sparkling like festival lights at the unexpected reunion.
“It’s Y/n-san and Uesugi-kun!”
Nino’s cheerful mood immediately vanished as if someone had physically flipped a switch. A dark cloud seemed to form over her head. She narrowed her eyes, crossing her arms over her fashionable top in a defensive, hmph stance. The potential for a peaceful shopping trip had just been jeopardized.
“What are you two doing here?” she asked, voice flat, a layer of suspicion coating every syllable.
Ichika leaned in with a sly grin, elbow nudging the air playfully. “Oooh? Don’t tell me you were following us? That’s kind of naughty~” Her gaze flickered between Y/N and Futarou, amusement dancing in her eyes.
Miku, ever calm and soft-spoken in contrast to her sisters, simply tilted her head, her gaze resting softly on Y/N. “Hello, Y/n… Are you here to shop too?”
Itsuki’s entire face brightened, her typical hunger-driven excitement momentarily forgotten, replaced by genuine delight, as though she had just spotted a limited-edition strawberry cheesecake on sale. “Hey, Y/n!” she said, her voice chirpy, completely ignoring Futarou’s existence beside him.
Y/n chuckled, a warm sound that cut through the initial tension, waving lightly, a friendly smile forming on his lips. “Nice to see you too, Itsuki. Hey, Miku. And it’s great to meet you properly, Yotsuba!” He then shot a teasing look back at Ichika, matching her playful energy. “And no, we weren’t following you. Also—” he glanced at Nino, lips twitching, “—I’ll pretend I didn’t notice the disappointment on your face.”
Nino clicked her tongue in annoyance, flicking her gaze away, but her slightly flushed cheeks betrayed her true feelings, a mixture of genuine annoyance and perhaps a hint of embarrassment at being called out.
Futarou adjusted his bag on his shoulder, letting out a long, tired breath that suggested he was already done with this interaction before it even began.
“Why do people come to the mall?” he replied dryly, sarcasm dripping from every word. “To buy things. Really shocking, I know. Also—” he glared at Nino, “—could you at least try to hide that obvious disappointment?! It’s insulting!”
Nino whipped her hair to the side with a dismissive flick of her wrist, the movement sharp and deliberate. “Whatever.”
Ichika let out an awkward laugh, scratching her cheek with one finger, a tiny sweat drop practically appearing beside her head as she observed the brewing conflict. “Futarou really has learned how to deal with Nino, huh… their dynamic is intense.”
Yotsuba, completely oblivious to the underlying tension, leaned close to Miku and whispered not-so-quietly, loud enough for everyone to hear, “It feels like they have a generational beef!”
Miku nodded seriously, folding her arms thoughtfully. “Deep-rooted rivalry…”
Futarou almost choked on his own breath at the absurd description of his relationship with Nino.
