Y/n Okkotsu kept her head down as she walked through the crowded hallway, clutching her books to her chest. It was nearly the end of her last year in middle school, and all she wanted was to get through the day unnoticed. But that was nearly impossible when the curses were always there—lurking in the corners of her vision, crawling across ceilings, or hovering just out of sight, waiting for her to acknowledge them. No one else saw them, so how could she explain why she flinched and avoided certain areas like they were haunted?
Her stomach churned as she felt the familiar prickling sensation of a curse's presence. Today, it was smaller than the usual horrors that followed her, but no less disturbing. Its long, spider-like limbs clung to the ceiling, its face twisted into an expression of hunger and amusement, as if it knew exactly how much its presence terrified her. She quickened her pace, focusing on getting to class.
Maybe if I don't look at it, it'll go away, she thought. But the truth was, it never worked. The curses never went away. They always followed her, always watched.
Y/n turned a corner, her heart racing, and collided with someone. Her books flew out of her hands, scattering across the floor. She stumbled back and looked up, her breath catching in her throat.
Megumi Fushiguro.
Of all the people she could have run into, it had to be him.
He stood there, hands in his pockets, dark hair falling over his indifferent eyes. He was tall and carried an aura that made people pause—neither friendly nor aggressive, just detached, as if nothing in the school really mattered to him. He wasn't known to bully people, but if someone crossed a line or preyed on the weak, they learned quickly that Fushiguro didn't tolerate it.
Y/n felt her cheeks heat up, and she immediately lowered her gaze, shyness taking hold of her. She silently willed herself to disappear, to be invisible for just this moment. For a second, she thought he might just walk away and leave her be. But he didn't move.
"Watch it," he said, not harshly but with a tone that implied he was merely stating a fact.
"Sorry," Y/n whispered, barely above a breath, as she bent down to gather her scattered books. She hoped he would leave it at that, but when she glanced up, she noticed his eyes shifting ever so slightly—toward the ceiling.
Her blood ran cold. The curse was still there, its limbs skittering, its grotesque mouth pulling into a sneer as if it found the scene amusing. She forced her gaze back to her books, heart hammering. Did he just see it?
His expression remained unreadable, but there was a subtle tension in his stance, a barely perceptible shift in the way he held himself. His eyes met hers for a fleeting moment, something unspoken passing between them.
Y/n froze, unsure if she should move or stay rooted to the spot. The hallway around them seemed to dim, the noise of students blurring into a muffled hum.
"Move aside," he said softly, his tone not unkind but leaving no room for argument.
Y/n hesitated, the instinct to obey outweighing her confusion. She stepped back, watching as he moved past her. His fingers flexed at his sides, and then, with a fluid motion, he summoned not one but two wolf-like dogs. One was pitch black, its eyes gleaming with a fierce intensity; the other was pure white, its gaze sharp and alert. They appeared in a flash, their fur sleek and muscular forms poised for action.
The curse let out a screech, startled by the sudden manifestation. Y/n's eyes widened as the dogs moved with lethal grace. The black one lunged first, its movements powerful and precise, while the white dog circled around, cutting off the creature's escape. Together, they attacked with perfect coordination, tearing into the curse with relentless energy. Within moments, the grotesque figure disintegrated, leaving behind only a cold, empty space where it had been.
The hallway snapped back into its usual buzz, students oblivious to the entire scene. Y/n stood still, staring at the two dogs as they turned to her, their postures relaxed now that the threat was gone. The black one sniffed the air, while the white one padded closer, its eyes softening as it looked up at her.
Y/n's initial tension melted away, replaced by awe and a sense of warmth. She loved animals, and despite the supernatural nature of these dogs, they exuded a strange, calming energy. Without hesitation, she knelt down, her shyness momentarily forgotten as the black dog nudged her hand with its nose. The white dog sat beside her, its intelligent eyes watching her closely.
"They're beautiful," she whispered, fingers brushing through the black dog's fur, which felt surprisingly real and warm.
Megumi's gaze shifted to her, his eyes narrowing slightly as he observed the scene. For a moment, there was a glimmer of something softer in his expression before it disappeared behind his usual stoic mask.
"You can see them?" he asked, voice low and deliberate.
Y/n felt her breath hitch as she looked up at him, the question confirming what she had both feared and longed for: she wasn't alone in this. Slowly, she nodded.
The black dog gave her a quick nuzzle before stepping back to Fushiguro's side, and the white dog followed suit. With a simple, silent gesture from him, the dogs dissolved into wisps of shadow and light, fading as if they had never been there.
"What was that thing?" Y/n questioned not knowing what those strange creatures that had been haunting her half of her life.
"They're curses, they feed off negative energy" he replied
Students moving past without a second glance. Y/n watched Megumi walk away, his presence blending seamlessly back into the crowd. But for her, everything had changed. The monsters were real. And Megumi Fushiguro, the untouchable boy with an air of mystery, could see them too.
