"Who was that, goddess? I heard you squeal all the way from outside."
I laughed as Ayden came and wrapped his strong arms around my waist. He gave me a kiss that left me aching for more when he pulled away. "It was Harper."
Ayden rolled his eyes and sighed. "I told you it was probably best not to bother her. She's trying to fix her relationship with Jackson."
"She did! They're back together."
His brows rose. "Really? That's great!" Then he frowned and took a step back. "Wait, but the issue was that Harper didn't want a baby and Jackson did. Did they settle that matter?"
I linked my arms around his neck. Oh, Ayden. I loved my Sergeant to death, but he was a nosy one. Okay, maybe I was the nosy one, but I was worried about my best friend. I couldn't talk to anyone about what I knew about Harper. Not even Jamie. Or Ayden. I wasn't supposed to know myself, and this was HUGE. As soon as I heard the news, I magically somehow kept it together. I couldn't break down when she was there with me in her condo.
So, I waited and I kept it together. Then when I got home. . . I lost it. I held little Nate for the entire night. I couldn't stop crying as I thought about Harper not being able to carry her and Jackson's baby. Harper was such a good person; so why did I get to be pregnant and she didn't? I just thank God that Ayden had been working that night. He wouldn't have left me alone until I told him what was bothering me.
When I first found out I was pregnant, Harper told me she was starting to have baby fever. But she didn't bring it up again after that. Then when I noticed that she and Jackson were having issues, I tried to bring up the subject again. All she would say was that things changed. Jackson wanted a baby, and she didn't. I knew it was bullshit, but I didn't want to press her on the topic.
Then there was today. I didn't want to tell her I knew over the phone like that, but I couldn't hold the truth back any longer. I needed to tell her. And I was glad that I did. She and Jackson were going to be parents one day. That made my heart swell with joy for them. I never knew how much a child could change your life. For the better. Not until little Nate came into the picture.
I smiled up at Ayden. "Yes," I answered. "They settled it."
He smiled wide. "Does that mean they're trying to get pregnant? That's amazing. Little Nate can have someone to play with and then --" He stopped when he saw the look on my face. "What is it?"
I leaned into his body and kissed his neck. "Have I ever told you how sexy you are?"
He groaned as I sucked at the sensitive skin. "Yes," he rasped. "This morning, actually."
"Well, it bears repeating." I pulled back and looked in his eyes. "Did everything go okay at Cherise's?"
Ayden slipped his hands under my top and rubbed them along my back. "Mhm. I dropped him off and she'll watch him til morning."
I nibbled on my bottom lip. "So we have the house to ourselves? Whatever should we do, Sergeant?"
I pressed my hand against the bulge in his jeans. His head fell back and he moaned at the contact. I unbuttoned his jeans and pulled down his zipper. I freed his hard erection and started stroking him.
He lifted his head. "I know what you're doing, goddess."
I brushed my lips against his. "What am I doing?"
"You're -- fuck -- you're trying to distract me."
"Am I?"
When I gave him a deep kiss, he buried his hand in my hair, his tongue shooting into my mouth. He pushed me backwards, never breaking the lip-lock until I felt the dining room table behind me. Ayden pulled away to lift me onto the table. He ran his hands up my skirt and had my panties off within seconds.
